South Carolina commit Jamyest Williams expects ‘great’ year in 2017 for Gamecocks

GRAYSON, Ga. – Jamyest Williams’ journey toward a Georgia state title began the day he committed to South Carolina.
Williams and Grayson High School are 1 win from claiming a state championship, leaving the South Carolina commit with one more high school game before starting the next step in his career.
“It would be a huge blessing to finish my senior year off with a state championship,” Williams said. “We have been grinding hard trying to get the ring. … We have faced a lot of adversity, but we came together as a team. A lot of new guys came together and clicked and bonded with a lot of old guys that were already here. Came together and have done our thing.”
The South Carolina commit is preparing to play in the Georgia Class 7A state championship on Saturday night against Roswell. Grayson has not lost since it played IMG Academy in its season opener, before which Williams announced he would play at South Carolina.
At that point, the Gamecocks were 1-0, having won their season opener against Vanderbilt. With the regular season in the books and the Gamecocks headed for a bowl game, the 5-foot-9, 170-pound Williams said he saw what he expected from South Carolina.
“For a first year, I think it was pretty decent,” Williams said. “A lot of young guys on offense and all over the field, actually. I think the coaches had a decent year, and I think next year is going to be great.”
Williams, who is expected to compete to start at nickelback next season, took an official visit to Oklahoma last weekend. His dad is from Oklahoma City, and Williams said “it was a pretty good visit.”
Despite the visit, he said he “most definitely” maintains a solid commitment to South Carolina. Williams called defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson as soon as he got back from the visit. Robinson has been in touch plenty lately with Williams, South Carolina’s top-ranked commit. He will be at the Georgia Dome on Saturday to watch Williams play for the state title. Robinson also saw Williams on the first day of the contact period, which reopened on Nov. 27.
“He came the first day, Sunday,” Williams said. “He’s a really cool, casual guy. It just helps to get a relationship strong with my family.”
After Saturday, Williams will have the Under Armour All-America Game waiting for him, then he’ll get to work in the spring on preparing to step in and play early as a Gamecock.
“Whatever the coaches needed me to do because they expect me to do big things as soon as I get there,” he said. “They throw the young guys on the field, and if you are a good athlete and you can play, no matter who you are, they are going to throw you out there.”
Williams, part of South Carolina’s No. 16-ranked class, is one of many who should be counted on to see the field right away. He and his classmates hope to build on what South Carolina did this season.
“I knew we were going to get our wins, and we got them,” he said. “They are going to play hard. That’s all you can do. Now it’s get ready for next year and get ready for the bowl game.”
