South Carolina enters critical recruiting stretch

June 02, 2017

Will Muschamp Camp guests

For nine days in June, the South Carolina coaches will be busy evaluating prospects on campus during the Will Muschamp Football Camp.

The camp on Saturday is set to feature a handful of notable recruits, including 2018 junior college defensive tackle Jabari Ellis, a sophomore at Georgia Military College, though he’s not participating in on-the-field drills.

Ellis, who graduated from Lake Marion High School in Santee, S.C., has been on break from GMC for the last couple of weeks. He’ll go back to school on Sunday before returning to the road later in the month for more visits. That round of visits is expected to include a return to South Carolina and a trip to North Carolina State.

RJ Roderick plans to be back on Saturday after taking multiple visits earlier this spring. Before his stock began to take off, South Carolina’s offer looked like one he was ready to quickly accept, but he’s hitting up his ACC suitors to see what else is out there.

The 2018 safety graduates early from Cane Bay High School (Summerville, S.C.), so, at this point, we can safely assume that his decision is expected before the end of December.

However, the Dabo Swinney Football Camp looms in Upstate and what transpires there could ultimately be the deciding factor in Roderick’s recruitment. Clemson is evaluating Roderick as a running back, a spot the Tigers are currently holding for 5-star prospect Zamir White.

White, a former South Carolina target, recently received a 247Sports Crystal Ball selection by Landof10 reporter Jeremy Birmingham.

Quendarius Jefferson, a 2019 wide receiver from Hillcrest High School (Simpsonville, S.C.), will be back on campus for the first time since picking up an offer at the Spurs Up recruiting event. Jordon Simmons, a recently offered 2020 running back from McEachern High School (Powder Springs, Ga.), has also confirmed.

Sam James, a 3-star recruit from Richmond Hill, Ga., who camped at South Carolina after earning an offer last spring, indicated that he’s planning to be back for the workout on Saturday.

Also set to attend camp are Irmo (S.C.) High School teammates Trajan Jeffcoat (2018 DE) and Kendrell Flowers (2019 RB). Myrtle Beach (S.C.) High School 2020 quarterback Luke Doty will join them. All three were among the standouts at the EPT Showcase and are candidates to be offered by the Gamecocks.

Crystal Ball Eval

Two more South Carolina selections were issued late this week on the 247Sports Crystal Ball:

South Carolina: 2018 OT Dylan Wonnum: No beef here. Seems to be the logical choice, given the family connection. Plus, he’s been to the school for several notable recruiting events.

South Carolina: 2018 WR Josh Vann: Insert previous comment about Vann’s lack of visits to anywhere but South Carolina or Georgia. However, this pick was issued by an established Georgia reporter, so that certainly adds interest.
