Attallah, Ala., linebacker De’Rickey Wright (6-foot-4, 208 pounds) made a pair of recruiting stops last week. First he went to see Duke on Saturday and Sunday he came up to Columbia to check out South Carolina. While in Columbia he met with Will Muschamp and linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler and left with an offer.
“I got to see the new facility they have which is really amazing,” Wright said. “They took me around campus and I got to see the dorms and and a view of the campus. Amazing. I loved the coaches I got to talk to. I loved the facility and the campus is amazing.”
Wright is a versatile high school player who is used at quarterback, receiver, linebacker and safety. He said the Gamecocks have a specific spot in mind for him.
“They were talking about using me like a player like Skai Moore, a middle linebacker, something like that.”
The visit left a strong impression on Wright and it put the Gamecocks in a position of prominence with him.
“They fit in at the top,” he said. “I really enjoyed it and everything. I enjoyed the coaches and everything. It was good.”
He added that a couple of other schools he cared not to disclose also are at the top with him.
Wright also visited Clemson in December while the Tigers were practicing for the Cotton Bowl. He has’t been offered by the Tigers who see him as a safety. He also has visited Georgia Tech, Southern Miss and Vanderbilt. He said he plans to visit Nebraska, Virginia and possibly Alabama. And he plans to return to USC in the spring.
His other offers are Vanderbilt, Nebraska, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Troy, Southern Miss and South Alabama. He plans to decide this summer or during the early signing period and he will be an early grad.
Last season Wright said he had 57 tackles and about nine interceptions.
