New South Carolina head football coach Will Muschamp has made his first offer in Beaufort County.
According to Bluffton High School head football head coach Ken Cribb, Muschamp spoke with and extended an offer to Bobcats junior Cameron Bent on Monday.
Cribb said Muschamp called him Monday to let him know he was going to offer the 6-foot, 174-pound Class of 2017 athlete before contacting Bent. He said he confirmed with USC director of player personnel Robbie Liles that Muschamp did indeed speak with Bent and extend an offer.
Bent confirmed the offer himself on Twitter — “Blessed to receive a offer from university of #South Carolina.”
Despite playing in just seven games as a junior because of injuries, Bent was the Bobcats’ offensive MVP. Often running out of the wildcat formation, Bent carried the ball 57 times for 611 yards and seven touchdowns, an average of 10.7 yards per carry.
As a receiver he had just nine receptions, but they went for 249 yards and three touchdowns — a 27.7 per catch average.
“I’m telling you,” Cribb said, “he’s the fastest kid in South Carolina, if not the country.”
Despite his obvious talent, Cribb said Bent had long thought of himself as a baseball guy, so he’s a little behind the game at getting his stuff out there.
Cribb said he sent material on Bent out to Clemson, Oregon and South Carolina last week. While USC was the first to make an offer, Cribb said the other two have expressed interest.
The Bobcats coach said the three schools like the idea of Bent as a slot receiver.
“He’s just really starting to figure it out,” Cribb said. “He’s got a chance to be really fast.”
As of now, Bent has no rankings from any of the recruiting services.
