South Carolina football 2018 mock signing class 5.0: The Gamecocks offense

December 14, 2017

The South Carolina football team’s 2018 recruiting class already has commitments from most of the offensive prospects expected to sign with the Gamecocks.

With less than a week before the first signing period of the 2018 cycle, the Gamecocks are in the mix for a couple of offensive linemen. But that, for the most part, is it for that side of the ball.

The strength of South Carolina’s 2018 offensive class is at the skill positions: quarterback, running back and wide receiver. Because there are so many tight ends on the current roster, the position is likely to go without a signee in the 2018 class.

Below is SEC Country’s take for November on what the 2018 South Carolina signing class could look like on the first Wednesday in February.

Quarterback (1)

Dakereon Joyner, 4 stars (North Charleston, S.C.)

The Shrine Bowl quarterback will compete in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl before enrolling at South Carolina in January.

Running back (2)

Deshaun Fenwick, 3 stars (Bradenton, Fla.); Lavonte Valentine, 3 stars (Melbourne, Fla.)

Both running backs are expected to sign with the Gamecocks next week then enroll in January.

Wide receiver (4)

Josh Vann, 4 stars (Tucker, Ga.); Tyquan Johnson, 3 stars (Sylvania, Ga.); Ronnie Jamison, 3 stars (Irmo, S.C.); Darius Rush (Kingstree, S.C.), 3 stars

Vann, a U.S. Army All-American, has not made his signing plans public. But he’s expected to be solid with his commitment — even though his signing is delayed until February.

Jamison, who’s also firm with his commitment, will sign in February.

Rush will enroll in January, though he is now on board as an athlete, because his future could be on the defensive side of the ball.

Johnson’s signing plans have not yet been made public.

Offensive line (6)

Maxwell Iyama, 3 stars (Murfreesboro, Tenn.); Hank Manos, 3 stars (Chapin, S.C.); Wyatt Campbell, 3 stars (Lugoff, S.C.); LaMarius Benson, 3 stars (Covington, Ga.); Dylan Wonnum, 4 stars (Tucker, Ga.); Jovaughn Gwyn, 3 stars (Charlotte, N.C.)

Iyama, Manos and Campbell will enroll in January. Manos is playing in the Shrine Bowl and Under Armour All-American Bowl. Iyama is playing in the Offense-Defense bowl with Joyner.

Jesus Gibbs, who’s also set to sign next week, will do so as a defensive lineman, not an offensive lineman, where he was previously listed.

Gwyn is new to the list. He could visit South Carolina this weekend, before signing next week. He won’t graduate from high school until the spring. North Carolina State remains in the mix, but the Gamecocks will get the last stop, assuming he’s well enough to be on campus.
