South Carolina football eyes a final 4 (or more), including DE Brad Johnson

Jan. 30, 2017

Resetting the numbers

With Kyshaun Bryan’s official de-commitment announcement and Tyreek Johnson‘s greyshirt, South Carolina’s 2017 commitment class is at 20. For now.

When 4-star defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw makes his commitment official on Tuesday, the Gamecocks will be back up to 21, which will leave them with four open spots for signing day.

A quick look at the remaining targets:

4-star DE Robert Beal (Georgia commitment)

4-star DT Devonte Wyatt (Georgia commitment)

4-star DE Brad Johnson

3-star DE Aaron Sterling

3-star OT Jordon Carty

South Carolina will be able to sign four of the five of the prospects listed above, assuming the feelings are mutual. If 4-star cornerback commitment Jamyest Williams flips to Georgia, then all five could be added to the Gamecocks’ 2017 class.

It looks like the numbers should be able to work out, if everything goes in South Carolina’s favor on Wednesday. Given the state of the current roster, a full, 25-man signing class would be a nice way for Muschamp and his staff to start off 2017.

The family man

During the Sunday afternoon conversation with Brad Johnson’s coach from Pendleton (S.C.) High School, SEC Country asked if South Carolina had an advantage over Virginia Tech, based on proximity.

“Looking from the outside, you would say yes, but his family just wants him to be happy,” Paul Sutherland said. “They will support — and I will too — whatever decision he makes.

“But looking from the outside, you’d think that. But no one from his family will pressure him either way. They will support whatever decision he makes.”

Sutherland said that Johnson comes from a tight-knit family. It’s a support system that includes his mother, grandparents and younger brother.

“His family’s his family. In other words, his mom is not a fan. She is mom. His grandparents aren’t his fans, they’re his grandparents. They’re going to support him, whatever he does. Brad hasn’t changed, I can promise you that.”

I think this is far more likely than most fans realize.

Watch Wednesday and be proud Gamecock fans!
