South Carolina football mock signing class 2.0 — offense

The South Carolina football team’s 2018 recruiting class has commitments from 12 prospects that profile to play on the offensive side of the ball.
With four months left before National Signing Day, the Gamecocks are approaching max capacity on offense, so only a handful of targets remain, including 4-star tackle Dylan Wonnum (Tucker, Ga.) and 3-star guard Jovaughn Gwyn (Charlotte, N.C.). But there are already five prospects committed to play on Eric Wolford’s offensive line.
In terms of star power, the strength of South Carolina’s 2018 offensive class is at skill positions, such as quarterback, running back and wide receiver. Given the number of tight ends on the current roster, the position is likely to go without an addition during this recruiting cycle.
Below is SEC Country’s take for September on what the 2018 South Carolina signing class could look like on the first Wednesday in February.
Quarterback (1)
4-star Dakereon Joyner (North Charleston, S.C.)
In the early phases of the 2018 recruiting cycle, South Carolina was shooting for two quarterbacks, because of the amount of scholarship players on the current roster.
While co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper has to be pleased with the one he’s got committed, there’s probably a degree of concern about the future of the position, because of the numbers.
With an eye on potentially landing a second quarterback, the Gamecocks are monitoring a few prospects in the class, but there are other positions of need in the 2018 class.
Running back (2)
3-star Deshaun Fenwick (Bradenton, Fla.), 3-star Lavonte Valentine (Melbourne, Fla.)
Fenwick is the thunder and Valentine is the lightning. It’s a nice 1-2 punch for running backs coach Bobby Bentley.
With a trio of sophomores entrenched as the top options on the current roster, there’s the possibility of turnover at the position, so South Carolina took a proactive approach at running back in 2018.
Plus, the Gamecocks didn’t sign a scholarship running back in 2017.
Wide receiver (4)
4-star Josh Vann (Tucker, Ga.), 3-star Tyquan Johnson (Sylvania, Ga.), 3-star Ronnie Jamison (Irmo, S.C.), 3-star Darius Rush (Kingstree, S.C.)
The rebuild of the wide receiver position continues for co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon, who played a big part in landing a commitment from Vann, the highest rated prospect in South Carolina’s class.
Johnson, Jamison and Rush are all firm with their commitments. Vann, who took an official visit to Kansas State last weekend, doesn’t fall into that category.
Offensive line (5)
3-star Maxwell Iyama (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), 3-star Hank Manos (Chapin, S.C.), 3-star Wyatt Campbell (Lugoff, S.C.), 3-star Jesus Gibbs (Dumfries, Va.), 3-star LaMarius Benson (Covington, Ga.)
Gwyn and Wonnum appear to be the top remaining prospects for the Gamecocks offensive line class, but there’s also Damien Lewis, a junior college guard from Northwest Mississippi, who took an official visit earlier this year.
Wonnum indicated that Auburn is his leader, not South Carolina, where his brother is an emerging star as an outside linebacker/defensive end. Gwyn continues to mull his options: Duke, N.C. State and South Carolina.
