South Carolina football, recruiting mailbag: Gamecocks head to Texas

These questions were received via Twitter.

Who do you think fills in the final spots for this class, if National Signing Day was today? —@xXSirSpurXx

South Carolina has 18 commitments — 19 if you count Tyreek Johnson — so there’s not a lot of room left. Maybe four or five spots.

There are a few of the top-tier-type guys I think South Carolina would sign, if today was the first Wednesday in February: OL Jovaughn Gwyn, DT Rick Sandidge and LB Channing Tindall.

Beyond that trio, there are also a number of fallback prospects who would hop on a committable offer from the Gamecocks.

Is Kurt Roper’s seat getting hot? — @nick29379

Will Muschamp was asked a week or two ago if he was pleased with the offensive play-calling. His answer, more or less, was yes. Now, if the offensive struggles continue for the next eight games or so, then I think it’s safe to say that Muschamp would probably have to consider his options with the offensive coordinator post.

It seems to me that most South Carolina fans were skeptical of the hire, before Roper called his first play for the Gamecocks. Fair or unfair, I just think that’s the way it is/was.

Do you think SC offense can/will improve continue into SEC play? — @xXSirSpurXx

The complexion of the offense changed drastically when Deebo Samuel got hurt and it certainly doesn’t help that Zack Bailey is also going to be sidelined for a little while. They can’t afford many more injuries now that Cory Helms is also banged up.

Beyond the injury stuff, a lot depends on Jake Bentley’s progress. For me, the biggest concern with his play this season is the lack of accuracy downfield. If he can get a little more consistent throwing the deep ball, I think that will start to open things up for the offense, the running game in particular.

Chance of landing C.J. Smith and flipping Jaycee Horn? — @nick29379

It depends on how hard they push for Smith.

As for Horn, maybe. If things keep going south up in Knoxville, I think that improves South Carolina’s odds of prying him away.

Do you think South Carolina leads for both C.J. Smith and Rick Sandidge? -@kevinharper__

Again, it depends on how hard they push for Smith, or if the feeling is mutual.

Still like South Carolina’s chances with Sandidge. At the end of the day, I think that’s where he signs.

How do you think the South Carolina defense will handle Texas A&M’s high-powered offense with players like Kellen Mond and Christian Kirk? — @xXSirSpurXx

Probably like they’ve played a lot of other teams. Keep everything in front. Try to avoid the big play. Bend, but don’t break. Tighten up in the red zone.

And hope like heck you can get a turnover or two, then capitalize with points.

It would also help if South Carolina’s offense can stay on the field with sustained drives and an efficient running game.

Any potential de-commitments? — @nick29379

In general, it’s always a possibility.

It wouldn’t be fair, to the prospect(s) or South Carolina, to write that I think (insert name) will eventually de-commit. But I will say that there are some guys who I don’t think end up in this class and there are a few different reasons why.

One, for example, could be grades. As of this spring, I know of at least one member in this 2018 commitment class who had some work to do academically, in order to qualify, so that could eventually be the impetus for a de-commitment.
