South Carolina freshman Sedee Keita will see his career probably begin after it was initially scheduled to as a result of an injury sustained during the offseason.
Frank Martin confirmed Tuesday, via Jon Rothstein of FanRag Sports, Keita will be out indefinitely due to a broken wrist. Keita, according to David Cloninger of GoGamecocks.com, injured the wrist in July. But it being a bone that doesn’t receive much blood flow slows down the healing process, helping to explain why this is still a concern in October.
Cloninger then dropped less hopeful intel, tweeting the Gamecocks don’t know if Keita’s wrist will ever heal completely. That seems like a dark prognosis, especially considering the 6-foot-10 big man entering as a highly touted recruit.
Keita suffered the injury less than a month after arriving on campus. The South Carolina newcomer visited Temple, Penn State and Providence as well, being from Philadelphia, and received scholarship offers from Georgetown, Tennessee, Arkansas and others as well. So, he had his pick of some SEC programs. Rivals tabbed Keita as a top-100 recruit and a four-star prospect, placing him at No. 90 in the country.
South Carolina, though, is counting on him to come in and help stem the tide after departures wounded its frontcourt depth. Michael Carrera, Mindaugas Kacinas and Laimonas Chatkevicius all graduated after the Gamecocks’ 25-9 season that concluded in the NIT. Reserves Eric Cobb and Raymond Darby were also dismissed from the team, leaving sophomore Chris Silva as the only returning player in the Gamecocks’ frontcourt.
