South Carolina in hot water with Georgia high school after recruiting mishap

May 22, 2018

The coaching staff at South Carolina has been hitting the recruiting trail hard this offseason in an attempt to build off the momentum from the 2018 class that ranked 19th nationally in the 247Sports composite rankings. So far, it’s paid off for the Gamecocks. They currently have the No. 13 class in the country for 2019.

That doesn’t mean they have been perfect at every turn, however. One Atlanta-area high school apparently isn’t pleased with the Gamecocks and their recruiting tactics.

According to The State’s Phil Kornblut, Stephenson High School assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Corey Johnson tweeted, “Stephenson LB Tra Wilkins is reopening his recruiting and South Carolina is no longer welcome at Stephenson High School!!!”.

That tweet has since been deleted.

Wilkins is a 3-star linebacker

who was offered a scholarship by South Carolina in December. In addition to that offer, the Stone Mountain, Ga., native also has offers from Alabama, Georgia, Auburn and several other major programs.

So, why does Johnson and others involved with the Stephenson football program have an issue with South Carolina? Well, it all stems from Wilkins attempting to cash in on the offer he was given.

Wilkins committed via Twitter in April, but Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp wanted to pump the brakes until he could see the 6-foot-2, 210-pound defender in practice, according to the report from Kornblut. That “non-committable” offer didn’t sit well with Johnson.

The situation didn’t stop there, either. After a radio interview where Johnson defended his deleted tweet, the Stephenson assistant coach made another post.

“I have been advised that Stephenson is a public school and South Carolina is always welcome to visit!!!” Johnson tweeted out.

Yet again, the tweet was deleted.

It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out. South Carolina has offered eight players at Stephenson and has a history of having a successful relationship with the Georgia high school.
