South Carolina is wide receiver commitment Kyle Davis

March 20, 2015

The bad news for South Carolina is wide receiver commitment Kyle Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga./Archer) is continuing to take visits. The good news for the Gamecocks is, up to this point, he hasn’t been overwhelmed on any of his trips.

The four-star standout pledged to South Carolina on July 26 and remains on the commitment list. He has, however, taken trips to Georgia, Tennessee and Auburn this spring and while he doesn’t have anything set up elsewhere right now, he’s going to continue to weigh his options.

“No, not really,” Davis said, when asked if any trip he’s taken has stood out above another.

“I don’t really compare schools. They just kind of put what they have to offer in my face. I’m just kind of just exposed to their program. I go places for the enjoyment and the entertainment.”

Davis is ranked as the No. 173 prospect in the 247Sports Composite rankings and the No. 15 player in the state of Georgia.

He was the first commitment of South Carolina’s 2016 recruiting class and the worry is certainly there that he’ll flip.

“You have to put yourself in my shoes,” Davis said. “If you work this hard and have these opportunities, why not take advantage of them? It’d be a waste not to experience everything. It’s all right in front of me, so I’m going to take advantage of it.”

Davis, who still plans to graduate in December, is keeping in close contact with the coaches at South Carolina though. He speaks often with recruiter G.A. Mangus and also catches up from time to time with wide receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr.

“I talk with coach Mangus about every other day,” Davis said. “Spurrier Jr. will DM me on Twitter sometimes. We’re all pretty tight. I don’t know if I’ll get to South Carolina this spring. I don’t really plan my visits. It just kind of happens.”

The recruiting process for him isn’t over yet though.

“All of my options are open. I don’t know when I’ll make my final decision. I’ll let you all know.”

It is a HUGE mistake for us to accept this guy's commitment. We should make it clear that we don not accept one way commitments. If we accept a commitment from a player his recruitment is over and no other visits will be allowed. Likewise, the guy who commits is guaranteed a spot in our recruiting class. Otherwise, it's not a commitment anyway and we end up looking stupid getting played by 18 year olds.

I agree w/ pick's assessment and will go one further. Because we know the possibility exists that he could flip at some future point, we should keep recruiting. If he misses out, too bad. I don't blame the kid for exploring all of his options, but don't commit if you still plan on looking around.
