South Carolina LB commitment Ernest Jones growing bonds with coaches, players
July 03, 2017
For the first time since he committed on Cinco de Mayo, 3-star linebacker Ernest Jones returned to South Carolina last month for the Will Muschamp Football Camp.
Jones, who was accompanied by his mom and younger brother, was reunited with his future position coach, Coleman Hutzler.
“It was great. He’s an awesome coach. He showed me some things that I can take home to my team at Ware County and help some of the boys with,” Jones said. “He’s a great coach. He explained stuff to me that I never [heard] before.”
The Gamecocks linebackers coach/special teams coordinator played a significant factor in convincing Jones to commit over Duke, Florida, Georgia Tech and Tennessee. The June camp session provided prospect and coach with their first opportunity to work together during on-field drills.
“He told me we were going to do some 1-on-1 things and my expectations were high for him and he met those,” Jones said. “I think we’re going to have a great three or four years together and do some big things.”
Freshman linebacker Sherrod Greene was among the current players who Jones got to know a little bit during the camp.
“He was helping out with one of the drills, so he was showing me some things I was doing wrong or helping me with some stuff,” Jones said. “Those guys are cool, too.”
Bonds are also developing with some of the other 2018 commitments.
“The class is growing tremendously,” Jones said. “(R.J.) Roderick, me and him talk a little bit. Deshaun Fenwick, we spoke a little bit. Dakereon Joyner, we exchanged texts before he committed and after he committed, so I kind of felt South Carolina was where he was coming.”
Plans already have been made for a return later this month.
“Every time I get a chance to come to Columbia, I’m coming,” Jones said. “It’s the best. I love coming there. The coaches treat me so well and it’s just an all-around joy for me and my family to get up there when we can.”
According to the 247Sports composite, Jones is ranked as the No. 60 outside linebacker in the Class of 2018.
