South Carolina QB commit Luke Doty has a few goals to hit before joining Gamecocks

Luke Doty is coming off winning a state championship and will be enrolling at South Carolina in January.
But the Myrtle Beach quarterback and Gamecocks commit won’t be dwelling on either of those things as he gets ready for his final high school season. Spring practice starts around the state this week and then a busy summer ahead for Doty.
“I really just try to take it one day, practice and visit at a time,” Doty said. “Of course, I look forward to joining the Gamecocks but I also have to focus on my team and accomplishing our goals for the upcoming season. Some of those goals include beating Conway and keeping the Victory Bell at home, winning the region and going back to state championship.”
In his first year as starting quarterback last season, Doty threw for 3,037 yards and rushed for 701 with 43 total touchdowns. He threw a career-high seven touchdowns in the 49-7 win over Wilson in September.
In the state title win against Greer, Doty threw for 244 yards and had three total scores. But many of Doty’s teammates from last year’s team have graduated and he will be one of the few returning starters for the Myrtle Beach offense this season.
“Our whole mindset it is a new season. We can’t dwell on what winning a state championship last year,” said Doty, who is ranked as No. 48 player in Class of 2020 by 247Sports. “It is a new season and we got new goals to focus on. It is going to be a good spring and summer. We got a great team and looking forward to great season.
Doty spent the weekend in Columbia at the Spurs Up Cookout at USC on Saturday then participated Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina for the Opening Regional where he had a strong showing.
At the Cookout, he was able to connect with future Gamecock commits and targets including receivers DaQuon Stewart and Mike Wyman, who also will be part of USC Class of 2020. Stewart also was at The Opening where he hauled in a few spectacular catches before his day was cut short when he suffered a minor injury.
Doty also spent time with Ze’Vian Capers, an Arkansas commit, who was taking a visit to USC. All four were on the team in the scavenger hunt that took place Saturday and Doty was able get to know more of his future teammates.
“It was good to get around guys that are high profile prospects and hang out with them and build better relationships with,” Doty said. “We will be doing that next few years so it was good to be starting to build that bond.
“Ze’vian was with us. What I heard from him is that had a great time. I told him to keep in touch. He is very impressed with everyone and we made a great impression.
