South Carolina QB commitment Jay Urich working toward full recovery
Jan. 16, 2017
Fortunately, for future South Carolina quarterback Jay Urich, surgery wasn’t required to repair the shoulder he injured during his final high school game.
Urich, who suffered a Level-5 AC joint sprain in his left shoulder, is well on his way to a full recovery.
“Four weeks ago, it was still hurting,” he said. “Now, I can’t even feel it.”
But the work isn’t over yet. Urich still has some more rehab ahead of him before he’s back to 100 percent.
“This past couple of weeks have been really great. I’ve been doing physical therapy a lot, just trying to continue to work harder,” he said. “I’m starting to appreciate the hard work and the grind more, because I couldn’t do anything for two months.
“Now, I’m trying to take advantage of it, embracing that and working hard. I’m trying to get back to 100 percent with physical therapy and with training. I’ll soon get started with weight lifting.”
This past weekend, the 3-star from Wren High School (Piedmont, S.C.) was in Columbia for his official visit to South Carolina. Below is his detailed account of the weekend:
How was the visit?
“I had a blast. It’s different than the normal unofficial visit. It’s really cool to be able to hang out with the players and see the coaches in a little different light, with the families. Just spending a lot of time with where I’m going to be living and where I’m going to be going, it was a lot of fun.”
What was the best part?
“I really enjoyed talking with Jake Bentley. He was my host. Just hanging out with him was one of my favorite parts about the visit. He’s so awesome. I really like him. Another part was the food was great. Had a lot of good food. Being able to put on the uniform was up there at the top. Just being able to hang out with the guys was cool.”
What about talking with the coaches, Coach (Will) Muschamp and Coach (Kurt) Roper, what were the conversations like with them?
“Had a great conversation with Coach Muschamp, just talking about how much he likes me and how excited they are for me to come down, to stay working and continue to work hard, be ready. They’re excited to get me down. Coach Roper was talking about normal stuff. There wasn’t a lot of football talk. There was a little bit, but other than that, it was normal conversations, just off-the-field things, good conversations. I had a great time. It was fun talking to them and building that relationship.”
How about spending time with the guys in the 2017 class, catching up with them and getting to know them a little bit better?
“That was great, too. That was big. I got to talk to a lot of different people. I was hanging out a lot with Eric Douglas and some of the early enrollees. I was hanging out with OrTre (Smith) and Summie (Carlay) and all those guys. Will Register, I was hanging out a lot with — Sherrod Greene, Tony Gray, Brad Johnson – Jordan Rhodes, he’s awesome, got to talk to him a lot.
“I’ve been really pushing Brad to come be a Gamecock. It’s been very, very cool to talk to him, because I know him a little bit from hanging out. But it was really cool to hang out with all of the guys.”
Do you think y’all have a good chance at getting Brad to join you?
“I do. I think it’s going to be good, because I think he’s down to Virginia Tech and South Carolina. He’s awesome. On the field, great, heck of an athlete. But off the field, he’s also just a great guy. I feel like I would want to be his teammate. That says a lot about him. He’s just awesome on and off the field, Brad is.”
