South Carolina recruiting mailbag: Flip candidates after the Tennessee win
October 18, 2017
Under coach Will Muschamp, the South Carolina recruiting efforts never stop. What’s the latest word from the Gamecocks?
SEC Country fielded a number of questions from Twitter in our recruiting mailbag this week.
How much does winning Saturday at Tennessee help flip Dorian Gerald and Jaycee Horn? —@UCanCallMeBurt
Tremendously, because it drove another stake into Butch Jones’ coffin.
If Tennessee was off to a great start and there was zero chatter about Jones and his future on Rocky Top, I don’t think we’d be talking about Gerald as a guy who could de-commit from Tennessee. But if Jones gets fired, you can count on Gerald opening things up.
Just moments after Horn announced his commitment to Tennessee, he said that other schools were still in the mix. South Carolina, which he once listed as a leader, was at the top of the list of schools in that conversation. Alabama is, too. Clemson, maybe to a lesser degree, is as well.
Like Gerald, if Jones is fired, Horn probably goes back on the market, even though he never really took himself off of it.
Any flip candidates? Personally, I see Dorian Gerald and Jaycee Horn as our best bets. Can South Carolina land another big fish? — @jamaicanlife04
Yep, those guys are the main two, in my estimation.
Florida State defensive back commitment Israel Mukuamu is another one. He took an official visit to South Carolina earlier this month.
Louisville defensive end commitment Jarrett Jackson recently entered the conversation. It seems like things are starting to pick up there, especially since South Carolina just offered.
How do you see the South Carolina recruiting class for 2018? — @wesleyhhodge
Using the 247Sports commitment calculator, I added Dylan Wonnum, Channing Tindall, Rick Sandidge, Horn and Gerald to the Gamecocks class, because I think those are the most likely guys to end up in this haul.
The projected team score with those guys was 234.33, which would have been No. 18 in the country during the 2017 cycle, according to the 247Sports composite. If South Carolina finishes inside the top 20, it will be the Gamecocks’ highest-rated class under Muschamp.
Which recruit could potentially commit next? Commitment dates? Any recruits potentially committing in October? — @DHannum8
To my knowledge, the only South Carolina target with a firm commitment date is K.J. Henry on Dec. 20.
As far as who could commit next, I don’t know for sure, but it feels like Tindall is the next-most-likely guy. I suppose it’s possible that he announces something this month, because he once planned to have a decision in September. But that’s a little bit of speculation at this point.
Wonnum is expected to make a decision in December. Dax Hollifield and Sandidge won’t be ready until at least January.
What’s the latest on Savion Smith? — @Lamnot1285
I don’t think there’s much going on at all between him and South Carolina. I believe he’s more interested in other options — Alabama, to be specific.
