South Carolina recruiting news and notes from The Opening in Atlanta
March 26, 2018
BUFORD, Ga. – There are plenty of South Carolina recruiting items to pass along from the annual stop at Buford High School by The Opening.
Two of the Gamecocks top 2019 targets scored invites to The Opening finals: 5-star wide receiver Jadon Haselwood (Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood, Ga.) and 4-star linebacker Kalen Deloach (Islands High School in Savannah, Ga.).
Spring game visitors
Several of the top 2019 prospects from the camp will be in Columbia next Saturday for the annual Garnet and Black spring game:
Toney started off strong, showing his fluid movement skills as a route-runner and natural hands as a pass-catcher. As you’ll see in the clip above, Toney looked solid in competitive situations, but missed out on a majority of the 1-on-1 work.
A tweaked hamstring left him sidelined with a bag of ice, to nurse the injury. Frankly, it’s a little bit of a surprise that more players didn’t suffer those types of injuries, given the unseasonably cold weather.
Another tight end take
Toney won’t be the only tight end added to the South Carolina recruiting class in 2019. Fromm, who maintains regular contact with tight ends coach Pat Washington, said the Gamecocks plan to sign two during the upcoming recruiting cycle.
South Carolina did not sign a scholarship tight end with the 2018 class.
Crystal Ball pick
South Carolina already has one 2020 commitment in running back Mecose Todd (Villa Rica, Ga.). Could a second prospect from the haul be added to the class?
Maybe.
Cornerback Jalen Huff, who’s cousins with sophomore defensive back Jamyest Williams, landed an offer from the Gamecocks earlier this spring while he was on campus for his first visit.
Kentucky, Louisville and Ole Miss have also offered, but South Carolina is clearly running out ahead of the pack for Huff, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound prospect from Buford (Ga.) High School.
