South Carolina recruiting: OL coach Eric Wolford stays busy

March 3, 2017

South Carolina offensive line coach Eric Wolford has dispensed a handful of offers since taking over in place of Shawn Elliott.

The most recent Wolford offer went to Ollie Lane, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound 3-star guard from Clayton, Tenn., who was on campus all day Thursday. During South Carolina’s junior day event on Saturday, Wolford offered Jovaughn Gwyn, an unranked prospect from Charlotte, N.C.

Gwyn (6-3, 290) has also taken visits to Wake Forest and N.C. State this spring. On Saturday, he’s heading to Clemson. After that, he’ll see Duke and Georgia Tech.

“When I go on trips, are they more talking about their athletics or are they more talking about their education, their school?” he said, when asked about factors he’ll consider before reaching a decision.

“Then, the O-line coach. I have to like the O-line coach because that’s who I’m going to be with most of the time. And, then, their strength and conditioning, how they do things on that.”

Gwyn got to see Wolford at work on Saturday during the Gamecocks’ first practice of the spring.

“He was throwing in his new (ideas) — since he just came in – he was with the 49ers. … that’s great, too, because he knows what the NFL wants and what the NFL needs,” Gwyn said.

Of the schools he’s visited so far, Wake Forest and N.C. State have impressed him the most. A decision has been targeted for the month of May.

Another OL visitor

Three-star prospect Casey Holman, the No. 44-ranked offensive tackle in the Class of 2018, is being recruited by Wolford as a guard.

“He’s a good coach, coached with the 49ers, so I know he knows what to do,” Holman said. “I learned a lot just from him at the junior day. I think he’s a great coach and I really think he’s going to help the offensive line at USC.”

The 6-foot-4, 285-pound prospect from Snellville, Ga., has been to South Carolina four times. Saturday was his first opportunity to see how Wolford works on the field.

“He was straight-up and he told us that they’re not there yet, but they’re getting there. That’s the kind of optimism I like,” Holman said.

This year, he’s visited Vanderbilt, Duke and Mississippi State. North Carolina will have him on campus this weekend.

“I’m really still in the process,” Holman said, when asked about his list of favorites.

“I’m just taking all the visits (to schools) I’m interested in and just kind of taking it all in, to see where the teams stand with me, then I can tell them where I stand with them after I visit and get to see everything I need to see.”

Holman wants to commit before the start of his senior season but acknowledged that a decision could come sooner or later.

“There are some schools that I need to go see before I commit,” he said. “I want to go to Miami before I commit, just because they were the first big school to believe in me and offer me, so I feel like I owe them a visit, so I’ll definitely visit them before I commit.”
