South Carolina recruiting trends, a week before National Signing Day
January 31, 2018
Decision day for 4-star WR
One of the five noncommitted targets will come off the board on Wednesday afternoon.
At this point, 4-star wide receiver Warren Thompson, who took an official visit to South Carolina this past weekend, appears to be set to announce a commitment to Florida State.
Coaches from both schools were in to see him in the days following his trip to Columbia — Gamecocks offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon was scheduled for a visit on Tuesday.
Thompson, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound prospect from Armwood High School (Seffner, Fla.), committed to Florida State coach Willie Taggart while he was still the coach at Oregon. Thompson, of course, de-committed from the Ducks after Taggart took over in Tallahassee.
According to the 247Sports composite, Florida State is heavily favored to land Thompson when he announces his commitment.
If that decision would have been made a month ago, one SEC Country source close to Thompson would’ve predicted a commitment to the Seminoles. However, the same source wasn’t so certain as of Tuesday night. In fact, the source isn’t sure which direction Thompson is headed.
Noles247 recruiting insider Josh Newberg issued a Crystal Ball pick for Florida State last April and it’s remained unchanged since then. While it may not necessarily be an be-all, end-all indication of what Thompson ultimately does, Newberg has a strong connection with the Seminoles’ new staff.
South Carolina has no Crystal Ball picks for Thompson.
A favorable South Carolina recruiting trend
Three-star defensive end John Mincey is trending in South Carolina’s direction on the Crystal Ball. The run on Gamecocks selections began on Monday, two days after his official visit concluded.
It was a dramatic shift for Mincey, a 6-4, 255-pound prospect from Clinch County High School (Homerville, Ga.). The No. 38-ranked strongside defensive end was once thought to be a Tennessee lean.
Mincey could take an official visit to Ole Miss this weekend.
The others
South Carolina continues to be heavily favored for 4-star offensive tackle Dylan Wonnum (Tucker, Ga.) and 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge (Concord, N.C.).
A total of 43 South Carolina selections have been issued on the Crystal Ball. No other school has a single one. Sandidge’s count is up to 27. Wonnum, of course, has 16.
Three-star lineman LaMarius Benson (Covington, Ga.) has received a couple of selections for Central Florida. His standing with the Gamecocks has sort of been in question for much of his commitment because of academic concerns.
Four-star athlete Bryce Thompson (Irmo, S.C.) is the only committed prospect from the 2018 class who’s expected to sign next Wednesday. Junior college wide receiver Ronnie Jamison (Irmo, S.C.) isn’t likely to end up at South Carolina because of academic issues.
