South Carolina recruiting weekend to feature Elite Quarterback Camp, top in-state prospect

June 17, 2017

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina’s first summer recruiting push comes to a close at the conclusion of this weekend’s round of on-campus camps.

The Gamecocks staff has been busy since June 4, barely stopping for a day off since the first edition of the Will Muschamp Football Camp. Along with the final Muschamp Camp session of the month, South Carolina also is expected to send coaches east of Columbia to Ridge View High School on Friday for another satellite camp.

Friday also will feature the Elite Quarterback Camp, which will be held in Williams-Brice Stadium. All prior Muschamp Camp sessions were held on the practice field.

And, like last Saturday, South Carolina will host a 7-on-7 tournament for high school teams and a lineman-only camp. The lineman camp will be back over at Stone Soccer Stadium.

Several prospects are expected to be on campus this weekend.

Xavier Thomas, who’s listed by 247 as the top in-state prospect in the class of 2018, will visit South Carolina on Friday. The defensive end from Wilson High School in Florence visited Clemson earlier this week for camp.

Prior visit confirmations included 2017 DE Matthew Butler (Garner, N.C.) and 2018 DB Israel Mukuamu (Berkeley, S.C.)

Butler is a 6-foot-4, 260-pound 3-star with offers from Duke, North Carolina State, Penn State and Virginia. He’s ranked as the No. 26 strong-side defensive end in the country.

Mukuamu’s name is just starting to get out. Listed at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, Mukuamu is a little raw, but has tremendous length and range. He’ll be counted among the top 2018 in-state prospects and could end up with an offer sheet reflective of that.

South Carolina 3-star offensive line commitment Summie Carlay will be in town for the lineman camp. He’ll be joined by several of his teammates from Laurens High School. They’re also expected to field a 7-on-7 squad.

Carlay’s classmate, 3-star quarterback Jay Urich, will be on campus Saturday with his teammates from Wren High School (Piedmont, S.C.) for the 7-on-7 tournament.

The Gamecocks will also host 2018 TE Zach Sheffer, who was offered in May. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound prospect from Nease High School (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) also has offers from Auburn, Tennessee, Michigan and Virginia Tech.
