South Carolina recruits headed to Oregon for The Opening
June 28, 2017
SEC Country’s team of reporters will be on hand to provide updates on several of the top 2018 prospects in the country.
Where do the Gamecocks stand with those recruits?
OL Jovaughn Gwyn
3-star prospect
Charlotte, N.C.
Other options: Duke, North Carolina State, Wake Forest
Skinny: Gwyn visited South Carolina earlier this month during camp season, but he’s also been back to Duke and N.C. State. A decision could be announced at some point this week.
DE KJ Henry
5-star prospect
Clemmons, N.C.
Other options: Alabama, Clemson, Georgia
Skinny: South Carolina is hanging on against some of the big guns on the recruiting trail. The Gamecocks need to get him back to campus for his first visit since the spring game. Henry, a December graduate, isn’t expected to make his decision before that month.
CB Jaycee Horn
4-star prospect
Alpharetta, Ga.
Other options: Alabama, Tennessee
Skinny: South Carolina and Alabama continue to flip-flop as the leaders for Horn, who visited South Carolina earlier this month for camp. He once planned to make a commitment during the summer, but that may no longer be the case.
DT Rick Sandidge
4-star prospect
Concord, N.C.
Other options: Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan
Skinny: There are plenty of suitors for Sandidge, not just the ones listed above. For now, he’s enjoying the recruiting process. And, also for now, he’s in no rush to make a decision. This could go all the way down to the wire.
DE Xavier Thomas
5-star prospect
Florence, S.C.
Other options: Clemson commitment
Skinny: If South Carolina is able to lure him back to campus, then it truly is game on.
OLB Channing Tindall
4-star prospect
Columbia, S.C.
Other options: Auburn, Georgia, Florida
Skinny: With his family in tow, Tindall was back on campus earlier this month for camp, where they received plenty of attention from the head coach. The Gamecocks continue to lead and they’ll have to hang on until the second or third game of the season before a commitment is made.
WR Josh Vann
4-star prospect
Tucker, Ga.
Other options: Alabama, Georgia
Skinny: Alabama is included on the “other options” line because Vann visited last week, just a few days before his second trip to South Carolina. This, however, continues to be a battle between the Dawgs and Gamecocks, with the edge going to Muschamp & Co.
