Former St. Peter's Prep standout Sheldon Royster, a four-star recruit at the Jersey City school, is transferring from South Carolina to Rutgers where he will be re-united with former high school teammates Savon Huggins and Keith Lumpkin, according to ScarletReport.com.

The recruiting site cited unidentified sources in reporting the transfer tonight.

The 5-11, 185-pound Royster, a safety with the Gamecocks, will have three years of eligibility left after sitting out this season. The Woodbridge native did not play as a true freshman at the SEC school in 2011.

Rich Hansen, the St. Peter's Prep coach, could not confirm the transfer by his former player tonight, saying the last he heard Royster was still trying to decide on a new school. Royster chose South Carolina over Rutgers coming out of high school.

"He's a tremendous athlete," Hansen said. "He's the kind of kid who can probably play a couple of positions. He was also a returner for us and was Savon's sidekick as a running back.

"If he is going to Rutgers he'd be a great get."

Royster, expected to officially join Rutgers on Sunday, will help shore up an area of need next season, since the Knights are short on safety depth after Duron Harmon graduates.
