South Carolina got back out on the field Tuesday for its first spring practice of 2012.
“It was a typical first day of spring ball,” coach Steve Spurrier said. “A lot of young guys running around and hustling. The effort was very good. Throwing and catching at times looked good, at times not so good. The defense looked pretty sharp. But a good first day and hopefully we’ll get a little better as the week progresses and be ready to have an excellent spring game on April 14.
“Our guys had an excellent winter conditioning. Joe Connolly, our strength coach, and his staff did a super job of getting our guys in position to give the effort and they have done it. Really impressed with the times, the lifts, the strength and conditioning of our team right now.”
The Gamecocks are dealing with a handful of injuries this spring and were without rising sophomore defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who sat out the first day because of an academic issue. He is expected to return to practice Thursday.
South Carolina also released its spring depth chart and Corey Robinson has a new position. The sophomore-to-be has moved from defensive tackle to offensive tackle, and is listed as the No. 2 left tackle on South Carolina's depth chart. Qua Gilchrist has also moved from linebacker to fullback.
