South Carolina held its first full-pads workout of the spring Friday at its Bluff Road practice facility.
The day for junior wide receiver Ace Sanders, the team’s leading returning receiver, was one of the most impressive. Sanders beat freshman cornerback Ahmad Christian twice during one-on-one drills and caught a long touchdown pass in 7-on-7 drills.
Sanders had 29 catches for 383 yards last season.Backup quarterback Dylan Thompson completed a long touchdown pass to redshirt freshman Shamier Jeffery in 7-on-7.One of the most competitive matchups during the team’s one-on-one “Oklahoma” drill was between 6-foot-7, 337-pound sophomore offensive lineman Corey Robinson and 6-1, 315-pound senior defensive tackle Byron Jerideau. The pair battled to a near standoff in several drills.
Several players changed numbers and/or positions. Qua Gilchrist is now at fullback. Ace Sanders is now wearing No. 1. Kelvin Rainey is wearing No. 5. Brison Williams is wearing No. 12 and working at strong safety. Corey Robinson is working with the offensive line and wearing No. 66. DeVonte Holloman has moved to spur and Damario Jeffery has moved to linebacker. Brock Stadnik is wearing No. 65. Clayton Stadnik is wearing No. 54. Aldrick Fordham has moved to defensive end. Tanner McEvoy is wearing No. 9
It didn’t take long for walk-on punter Mike Williamson from Orangeburg to get into the race for the starting position.Williamson is listed as co-No. 1 at the position along with scholarship punter Patrick Fish and could win the job if improves consistency improves.“He was booming them , some of the best looking punts I have seen on this field in a long time.,” Spurrier said. “That was encouraging.”
