Spurrier eager to get started on Michigan plan

Younger players get workas most starters are in exams

COLUMBIA — With most of his starters taking exams, Steve Spurrier and his coaching staff spent most of South Carolina’s first day of practice for the Outback Bowl working with younger players.

Spurrier and the Gamecocks, ranked No. 10 in the final regular-season USA TODAY coaches poll, are eager for the squad’s first full practice today so the team can step up its preparations for No. 22 Michigan.

“Michigan is a big, strong team with good team speed,” Spurrier. “They've been very, very good on defense at times. They have strong guys up front. At times, they've struggled a bit on offense. But at other times, they've looked very good on offense.

“They're 8-4 and they've lost to some good teams. It looks like they're tough to run on. Hopefully, they won't be too tough to hit a few balls on, but who knows until we go play?”

Spurrier again says he expects quarterback Connor Shaw to start for USC (10-2). Shaw has been cleared to take part fully in practices after missing the Clemson game because of a foot injury. Shaw’s backup, Dylan Thompson, passed for 310 yards with three touchdowns against the Tigers.

“The plan is to start Connor and get Dylan in somewhere in the first half, or first quarter, maybe,” said Spurrier. “We’ll get both of them ready to play and see how it goes.”

In 10 starts, Shaw passed for 1,732 yards with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 339 yards. Thompson, who started the other two games, has passed for 910 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions.

The different styles of the quarterbacks could prove to be a good change-up against Michigan, which features a highly regarded defense.

The Wolverines offense also can cause problems, particularly quarterback Denard Robinson, a shifty senior who lines up in a variety of positions.

“He's all over the place,” Spurrier said of Robinson. “The other quarterback (Devin Gardner) is a very good player. We just have to line up and play. It’s as simple as that".
