South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore underwent surgery in Birmingham on Friday to the knee he injured in the Gamecocks' Oct. 27 victory over Tennessee, and is now resting comfortably at his home in Columbia, according to head coach Steve Spurrier.
"Some of the best doctors in the world operated on him," Spurrier said, adding that the surgery went well.
Lattimore suffered a significant impact to the front of his right knee and the ensuing hyperextension of the knee resulted in injury to several ligaments, according to USC. Spurrier says that team physician Dr. Jeffrey Guy may meet with the media this week.
Lattimore was the team's leading rusher with 662 yards and 11 touchdowns on 143 yards. He was also the team's leading receiver with 26 catches for 173 yards. Lattimore is the school's all-time leader in touchdowns and rushing touchdowns.
Lattimore was coming off a season-ending left knee injury suffered against Mississippi State in the seventh game of the 2011 campaign.
It's not clear yet when Lattimore will be back but Spurrier has been optimistic that Lattimore would one day play football again. Spurrier has said that Lattimore taking a redshirt during the 2013 season to continue rehabilitating the injury, and then returning for the 2014 season was also a possibility.
