USC football coach Steve Spurrier returns to the scene of some of his greatest athletic achievements Saturday when his 8th ranked Gamecocks play at 3rd ranked Florida with the SEC East title likely hanging in the balance. Spurrier, of course, won a Heisman Trophy as a player at Florida in the 60s. And, of course, he won a national championship and seven SEC titles with the Gators as their coach in the 90s.

And he won an SEC East title in the Swamp as the Gamecocks’ coach two seasons ago. In fact, the Gamecocks have won the last two meetings in the series. The Gamecocks never have beaten Florida three straight seasons.

USC is coming off a two point loss at LSU, a game in which the Tigers’ defense manhandled the Gamecock’s up front and stuffed the running game. It was also a game in which Gamecock quarterback Connor Shaw ran way too much for Spurrier’s satisfaction.

At his weekly news conference Tuesday, Spurrier expressed hope that Lattimore, Shaw and the offensive line will be back on their game this Saturday.

Spurrier previews the upcoming Florida game [3:16]

Spurrier said Lattimore is getting over his bumps and bruises from the LSU game but defensive lineman Kelcy Quarles, Byron Jerideau and JT Surratt are still nursing their various injuries from last Saturday.

Florida is listed as a 3.5 point favorite as of Tuesday afternoon for the 3:30 PM kickoff on CBS.
