Spurrier: More peaceful around here
It goes without saying that the drama surrounding South Carolina’s quarterback situation has lessened considerably this season.
Nobody appreciates that more than South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, who went round and round with Stephen Garcia for the past four years before Garcia was finally booted from the team midway through last season.
“It’s been a little more peaceful around here,” Spurrier said Wednesday. “Not only that, but we didn’t have a quarterback competition to see who was going to be the starter this year.”
Heading into Thursday’s opener at Vanderbilt, junior Connor Shaw is entrenched as the Gamecocks’ starter. His numbers to end last season were off the charts. In his last three games, including wins against Clemson and Nebraska, he completed 74.5 percent of his passes for 657 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 239 yards and three more touchdowns.
“Everybody knows Connor is our quarterback this year, and Dylan Thompson has done well also," Spurrier said. "Again, we’ve got to go play the game and see what happens, pass-block and run the ball.
