Spurrier not totally pleased with Saturday’s scrimmage (AUDIO)

08/18/12

The USC football team went thru a situational scrimmage Saturday morning at Williams-Brice Stadium. Gamecock coach Steve Spurrier said afterwards the defense had a better day than the offense. Defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward said while that may have been true, it was largely due to the various situations they were practicing.

The University of South Carolina football team scrimmaged on Saturday morning, with the bulk of the workout focused on overtime situations.

Head coach Steve Spurrier was not overly impressed with his squad’s performance during the 90-minute workout that saw the younger players get most of the snaps.

“It was a lackluster type scrimmage with the receivers and tight ends dropping a bunch of passes and with the offensive linemen jumping offsides,” said Coach Spurrier. “It was pretty ugly on the offensive side. The defensive guys made some plays on some tipped balls. The receivers couldn’t catch it, so it went off their hands and some of the DB’s made some nice plays today.”

The offense scored seven times during the practice, five of which came after the team took possession 25 yards from paydirt, but also turned the ball over five times. Each of the top four quarterbacks, Connor Shaw, Dylan Thompson, Andrew Clifford and Seth Strickland threw a touchdown pass, but also was intercepted.

Walk-on cornerback Jessie Dukes had a pair of interceptions, while Kelcy Quarles and Jordan Diggs also picked off passes. Quin Smith recovered a fumble for the white-clad defensive squad.

“We made some plays, but we gave up some plays,” noted defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward. “We’ll continue to get better. I’m not upset about where we are. We’ve got 12 or 13 days before we play. I think we’ll be ready.”

The Gamecocks are scheduled to return to the Bluff Road “Proving Grounds” Sunday afternoon at 4:30 in a non-contact practice. The squad will be back in full pads on Monday night at 7:30 as they continue preparations for the August 30 season opener at Vanderbilt. All practices are closed.
