South Carolina had a surprise visitor at its Tuesday and Thursday practices last week – quarterback signee Michael Scarnecchia.
The 6-foot-4, 192-pounder from Fleming Island High School outside of Jacksonville, Fla., showed up to watch practice during his school’s spring break.
“He could have gone to the beach chasing girls and he came up here to try to learn a little offense,” head coach Steve Spurrier said. “That was interesting. He’s a kid who wants to learn everything about it.”
Spurrier began recruiting Scarnecchia personally after seeing him at one of South Carolina’s summer camps.
“He came here in football camp in the summer and was impressive,” Spurrier said. “I liked him as well as anybody we were recruiting.”
Scarnecchia is a three-star prospect who will arrive on campus this summer.
“He likes working out, too. He’s a lot like Connor Shaw. He likes lifting weights,” Spurrier said. “Sort of a thin-looking guy, but he’s actually pretty strong.”
