A confident Steve Spurrier said Monday afternoon he feels his team is ready to play well in the season opener Thursday night at Vanderbilt. Spurrier, at his first weekly news conference, said with the exception of cornerback Akeem Auguste and backup running back Shon Carson, his team is healthy.
Spurrier added that he also expects Vanderbilt to play well and noted that the Commodores have been pointing towards this game for months as a chance to impress the nation. The game will be televised on ESPN with kickoff set for 7:00 PM Eastern. USC has been made a touchdown favorite.
According to the two-deep depth chart released Monday, Jimmy LeGree will start at the corner position in place of Auguste, and walk-on Tyler Hull will go out as the first punter. Spurrier jokingly pointed out that Hull and #2 punter Patrick Fish will both where #13.
The Gamecocks will practice Monday night and Tuesday and depart Columbia for Nashville Wednesday. Spurrier said he’s not concerned about the weather in Nashville due to Isaac which he expects to take a more westerly path.
