In 1991, Florida State quarterback Casey Weldon finished runner up to Desmond Howard in the voting for the Heisman Trophy. His son, 2017 QB Cade Weldon 6'2" 190lbs of Tampa, is considering playing for Steve Spurrier, the 1966 Heisman winner.

Weldon worked out for Spurrier last Saturday at the Gamecocks’ final summer camp and he has them under consideration though he’s not going to hurry his process.

“I’m just going into my junior year so my main focus right now is winning games,” Weldon said. “Looking forward to this year and coming up with my team so we can get that state ring. As far as schools go right now, it’s really just wide open.”

Weldon has offers from USC, Miami, Kentucky, Wake Forest, Toledo, South Florida and Samford. USC quarterback coach GA Mangus has worked with Weldon on a couple of occasions and feels he’s a fit for the Gamecock offense.

“I’m athletic outside of the pocket and can throw on the run,” Weldon said. “Coach just wants me to go out this year and when some games.”

While in Columbia Saturday Weldon got the tour of the campus and facilities and was impressed with what he saw. He’d like to make his decision after his junior season and before the next spring. He’s also been to Florida State, Florida, Georgia, Wake Forest, Kentucky, Louisville and North Carolina.

The Seminoles have not yet offered and Weldon disputes the talk he’s going to follow in his father’s trail if he lands one.

“Everyone thinks that if I get the FSU offer that I’m going to commit on the spot, but it’s not really like that,” he said. “I’m actually going into this recruiting with an open mind and do what’s best for me.”

Last season Weldon passed for 2130 yards and 20 touchdowns.
