USC football coach Steve Spurrier left no doubt about it Tuesday at his weekly news conference. He, his assistants and his players care only about defeating Wofford this Saturday in Columbia. Clemson can hold till next week.
The Gamecocks completed their SEC schedule last Saturday with a 6-2 mark for the second straight year. Now, they want to complete a 7-0 home season while extending their home winning streak to 11. They will be facing a Wofford team which owns a share of the Southern Conference title and features a triple option offense that averages nearly 360 rushing yards per game.
Terrier fullback Eric Breitenstein is one of the nation’s top running backs with 1528 yards and 15 touchdowns. Breitenstein has rushed for at least 102 yards in every game except one this season and recently surpassed Wofford legend Shawn Graves as the school’s alltime leading rusher.
“We’re getting ready to play Wofford again,” Spurrier said. “This is the third time I’ve had the chance to coach against them and they’re a very similar team. Coach Ayers and his staff do a super job of coaching their players. They are fundamentally as sound as any team we play. He gets the most out of them. They are tri-champs of the Southern Conference along with Georgia Southern and Appalachian State. It’s very interesting, we’re going into our 11th game of season and we’re playing team with the exact same record that we have, 8-2over all and 6-2 in their conference. The difference is, 6-2 in their conference got them to be conference champs, and 6-2 for us got us third in the eastern division. Some 6-2′s are better than other 6-2′s, but that’s the way it works out.”

Both teams are 8-2 and each went 6-2 in conference play. USC is ranked 9th in the BCS this week and Wofford is 9th in the FCS ranking.
USC has not lost to Wofford since 1917, but the last two meetings were close encounters. In 2006, USC won 27-20, and in 2008 it was the Gamecocks by a 23-13 score.
