SEC Country spoke with Farrell earlier this month about the SEC schools that were recently listed in his top six. The 3-star prospect from Murphy High School (Mobile, Ala.) said he planned to release a top three before the start of his senior season.
South Carolina hosted Farrell earlier this summer for Muschamp Camp.
“I really like everything about Coach Muschamp. He’s a good, high-energy coach and he wants things to be done, and I really like that about him,” Farrell said.
The country’s No. 41 ranked defensive tackle spent a considerable amount of time with defensive line coach Lance Thompson.
“Before the camp, we were chilling with each other and he was talking about how he would love to have me there and I enjoyed him at the camp,” Farrell said. “He coached me up. It was a really good experience.
“The relationship that I keep with them and how I’m needed there, watching the depth chart, keeping good touch with the coaches, just making sure I’m a good fit to their school and it feels like home to my parents.”
Skinny: Make that another big premier program that South Carolina will have to contend with for a spot in the next cut down. Anytime Florida State is involved, it’s always a battle, though it remains to be seen how hard the Seminoles will push. Still, from this perspective, it would appear that Alabama holds the cards.
Yet another 2018 in-state prospect
South Carolina has already passed out several offers to in-state players from the 2018 class, and for good reason, because it’s an awfully strong class.
Another name that’s emerged this summer is Darius Rush, an athlete from CE Murray High School in Greeleyville. Rush was mentioned in Wednesday morning’s recap.
After looking strong as a wide receiver in June, the Gamecocks coaches invited him to work at cornerback this month, so he obliged Wednesday.
“They like my length and ball skills,” Rush said.
He added, “That’s something I’ve heard a few times this summer from schools, because you don’t see lot of 6-foot-2 corners, so I just wanted to give it a try.”
At the college level, Rush would prefer to play wide receiver, but he still had a good experience Wednesday.
“I always like being on campus at USC,” Rush said. “This was really my first time ever getting to work at corner, but I enjoyed it. We had a short 1-on-1 period, so I wish I was able to get more reps.”
Skinny: South Carolina has already offered several 2018 wide receivers, particularly in-state ones. Still, Rush is a name that’s worth tracking, particularly as a cornerback, because he more than held his own at the position, especially for a guy with so little experience there.
South Florida pass-rusher weighs in
Mikel Jones is among the more intriguing prospects to already stop through town this week. The 6-foot-2, 208-pound outside linebacker from Champagnet Catholic School in Hialeah, Fla. worked out at camp Monday, then returned Tuesday, to perform in front of Muschamp.
“It was a great experience, I liked both days a lot,” Jones said.
“I love the school. As soon as you enter the town the whole atmosphere changes. There’s fans everywhere and I’m sure they show a lot of love to the sports players. The facilities are on another level. I loved everything from the dorms to the weight room. It’s a really nice school.”
Muschamp made a good first-impression, too.
“He liked me and he’s been told that I did great both days. He didn’t tell me anything personally,” Jones said.
Jones had 78 tackles and 12 sacks as a freshman. The Class of 2019 prospect expects to return to South Carolina for a game at some point this fall.
Skinny: At this stage, Jones is a little undersized, but he’s got plenty of time to grow. Assuming that happens, Jones most certainly profiles as a player at the SEC level.
Remaining visitors
Davijuan Dean will camp Thursday at South Carolina. The 3-star running back from T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, S.C. lists offers from Appalachian State, Colorado State, Furman and Georgia Southern.
As noted earlier this week, 2019 CB Tyus Fields (Cornelius, N.C.) and 2019 CB Myles Baker (Newton, N.C.) will be on campus Friday with 2018 S Israel Mukuamu (Berkeley, S.C.). Fellow Elite Position Training teammate Quavian White is also expected to be in town. The 2018 cornerback from Greer was last on campus in June for a 7-on-7 tournament.
The cookout visitor list continues to take shape, with a few more confirmed guests.
