SpursUp Surveillance: Brooklyn’s best defender to visit South Carolina; CB target approaches decisionAugust 08, 2016
New York to ColumbiaRomello Martin, the No. 27 defensive tackle in the 2017 class, will spend the final weekend of his summer at South Carolina. The 3-star prospect is scheduled to arrive on Friday night in Columbia, S.C., and stay on campus through Sunday.
Martin, the No. 2 overall prospect in the state of New York, is a rising senior at Brooklyn’s Abraham Lincoln High School.
“Just seeing what they have to offer, what the campus is like,” Martin said when asked about what he’s looking forward to seeing next weekend.
Defensive line coach Lance Thompson has served as the primary recruiter for the Gamecocks.
“He’s saying that they need some guys up front and that I could be one of those,” Martin said.
This will be his first time in South Carolina, but it won’t be his first time in SEC country. Earlier this summer, Martin visited Florida. He also saw Florida State.
The three schools landed on his list of favorites in July.
The visit to South Carolina will be his final unofficial visit. This fall, he’ll start taking officials.
“I’m in the middle of cutting it down. I’m still trying to decide,” Martin said.
Skinny: One might assume this coming weekend in South Carolina will help the Gamecocks make the cut. Martin is looking to land at a school where he feels comfortable. And, like so many prospects, he wants to find a place that will prepare him for the NFL. One also might assume that Muschamp & Co. will make that sell.
Terrell sees Clemson againBefore the end of last month, South Carolina scored a visit from AJ Terrell, the top-rated cornerback in the country, according to Rivals. A 5-star player, the 2017 prospect from Westlake High School in Atlanta visited Clemson on Saturday for the team’s first practice in full pads.
Terrell told Robert MacRae of TheClemsonInsider that he’s close to deciding.
“I’m getting real comfortable with the program. I like a lot of things going on in Clemson,” Terrell said.
South Carolina hosted him in July, a few days after his previous trip to Clemson for the All In Cookout.
Skinny: The Gamecocks have had a seat at the table but haven’t had a lot to say. Terrell consistently has listed Clemson and Florida among his favorites. Though the most recent visit doesn’t always dictate the direction a prospect is leaning – look no further than T.J. Moore – it’s usually a good indication. The theory will hold up with Terrell, who’s expected to commit to the Tigers.
What this means for South CarolinaWith 4-star prospect LeAnthony Williams on board, Clemson probably is done at cornerback in 2017, which could result in Jamyest Williams removing the Tigers from his list.
That would be another feather in the cap for South Carolina, as the Gamecocks look to build upon their 2017 cornerback haul. Jamyest Williams, a 4-star prospect from Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga., remains one of their top targets.
Fellow 4-star CB Trajan Bandy has South Carolina under serious consideration, but his most recent visit to his hometown school helped Miami jump back to the top. The farther he gets from last month’s cookout in Columbia, the harder it will be for the Gamecocks to come out on top.
South Carolina’s visitorsCousins Austin and Kevin Pyne were on campus Saturday to meet with offensive line coach Shawn Elliott. They’re cousins with Drew Pyne, the 2020 quarterback from Connecticut who was offered by the Gamecocks earlier this year.
The Pyne family has had a couple of generations play in the NFL, including George II and George III.
Austin, a 2017 offensive lineman from Lawrence Academy in Groton, Mass., is the No. 25 center in the 2017 class. Villanova has offered. Kevin, a 2020 prospect from Millis, Mass., is already 6-foot-8, 265 pounds.
According to Dave Pyne, Austin’s father, the visit went well.
“We had a great visit with coach Elliott,” Dave said. “Coach Elliott wanted to see Austin and Kevin in person. (He’s) recruiting both Austin and Kevin. We had a visit with coach Elliott, and he’s a real fiery O-line coach. This place was just awesome.”
