Top 2018 athlete visits South CarolinaFrom this perspective, Derion Kendrick is the No. 2-ranked 2018 prospect in the state of South Carolina, though the 247Sports composite ranks him third.
Kendrick paid a visit to South Carolina on Friday with his teammate, 2018 DB Justin Reese and Strait Herron, the head coach at Rock Hill’s South Pointe High School. Kendrick is classified as a wide receiver, but Muschamp wants him to play defensive back for the Gamecocks.
Friday’s visit was jam-packed.
“I toured the education center. We went to the dorms and stuff and around the campus. We went to the locker room and they were getting the finishing touches up and stuff,” Kendrick said. “We went inside the indoor facility and they had the billboards with the players and then I went and talked to Coach Muschamp for a little bit. He showed me another piece on the side of the practice facility, how that’s going to be like. He showed me a couple of videos.”
The No. 7-ranked wide receiver in the country would be free to pick the position he wants at South Carolina, despite Muschamp’s preference.
“I know while (Muschamp) was coaching at Florida, I knew that he was a defensive-type of guy,” Kendrick said.
Skinny: Growing up, Kendrick was a Florida fan, but Clemson has positioned itself pretty well over the last 12 months. South Carolina certainly has work to do before it is a factor. But there is plenty of time to make that happen. Kendrick maintains that he has no list of favorites. This summer, he visited Clemson, Georgia, Florida State, NC State and Virginia Tech.
Montac’s other optionsThe cat got out of the bag on Steven Montac when his name was added to South Carolina’s online roster by mistake. For all intents and purposes, Montac is committed to the 2016 class. The defensive back will report for duty once his transcript is sent over from Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College.
Boise State was another option for Montac, who’s from Newton High School in Covington, Ga. Florida State was recruiting him as a 2017 prospect.
South Carolina was always highly thought of by the 5-foot-11, 190-pound prospect, who has four years to play three seasons.
“That’s a school that I really always wanted to go to … it just made it better that Coach (Travaris Robinson) and Coach Muschamp are the coaches there now,” Montac said. “Coach T-Rob actually coached my favorite player, Vernon Hargreaves. It’s just a blessing to be able to play for him and Coach Muschamp.”
Skinny: South Carolina continues to recruit his friend, 2017 WR Justin Marshall, who lists the Gamecocks among his favorites. Montac hopes Marshall will join him. “I mean, it’s all up to him,” Montac said. “Wherever he thinks is best for him, that’s where he’s going to go. I hope he comes, but if he doesn’t, I won’t be mad.”
Top 2018 RB enjoyed the cookoutMaster Teague was among the guests who visited South Carolina for the cookout. The rising junior from Blackman High School in Murfreesboro, Tenn. picked up an offer from the Gamecocks in May.
The cookout was his first trip to Columbia.
“It was fun,” Teague said. “It was fun to be around the coaches and players. I had a good time, did a lot of fun activities with everyone.”
Teague was impressed with what he heard from the educational portion of the visit.
“They hold you accountable for what you do and they communicate with the coaches and communicate with the parents, to make sure I’m on the right path to success,” he said. “I liked that. I also like that Coach (Bobby) Bentley showed me the kind of offense that they run. It’s kind of similar to what we run over here at my high school. I thought that was a good part.”
Skinny: South Carolina’s early offer has the Gamecocks sitting in good early position. Louisville, Tennessee and Vanderbilt also have offered.

- South Carolina offensive line target T.J. Moore is scheduled to announce his decision on Monday. The 4-star from Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, N.C. is down to South Carolina and Tennessee.
- Zamir White, the No. 1 running back in the class of 2018, visited South Carolina on Saturday. The 5-star prospect is out of Scotland County High School in Laurinburg, N.C.
- 2018 QB Emory Jones committed to Ohio State on Friday.
- South Carolina basketball target Naji Marshall committed to Xavier on Friday. On Sunday, 3-star SF Nicolas Claxton listed the Gamecocks in his top six.
