Are you ready for some football?
It’s here, folks. Football season is upon us.
The weekend tour starts Thursday night, just north of Charlotte at Concord High School for the Battle of the Bell, an annual grudge-match with A.L. Brown High School.
The towns of Concord and Kannapolis are separated by about 7-8 miles, depending on your route. Langston Wertz Jr. of The Charlotte Observer previewed the game on Wednesday.
Mike Newson, the coach for A.L. Brown who helped build the program at Butler High School, had plenty of battles with longtime Charlotte power Independence High School.
“It surprised me how much bigger (Brown-Concord) was and how much more it means,” Newsome said. “Because Charlotte is such a melting pot, it isn’t the same people still around who went to Independence 50 years ago, or the same people who went to Butler 20 years ago. But when you have two communities as old as Kannapolis and Concord are, it’s the same people, their sons and grandsons playing. That brings more meaning to the game and to the rivalry.”
Concord’s best two players are familiar names to South Carolina recruitniks. First, there’s Hamsah Nasirildeen, the latest commitment to the Gamecocks 2017 class. Up next is Rick Sandidge,
Nasirildeen, a 4-star addition, has received plenty of praise over the last couple of days. But Sandidge deserves plenty of attention, too. According to 247Sports, he’s the No. 7 defensive tackle in the class of 2018 and the No. 64 overall recruit in the country.
Rock Hill does it big
It’s not nearly as big as Texas or California. In terms of quantity, there aren’t nearly as many athletes as there are in Miami or metro Atlanta.

Rock Hill produces one NFL player per 8,512 people.”
On Friday night, District Three Stadium in “Rock Thrill” will host crosstown rivals South Pointe and Northwestern.
Tickets went on sale Tuesday.
South Pointe, the two-time defending 3A state champion, has several players that have been offered by South Carolina. Four-star WR Derion Kendrick plays quarterback for South Pointe. He’s the best prospect in York County. Some might argue he’s the best in the state. Two of his classmates, 2018 LB Eli Adams and CB Steven Gilmore Jr., also have early offers from the Gamecocks. A few others are drawing interest.
Northwestern, the defending 4A Division II state champs, have several college prospects. But the best one is a sophomore, WR Jamario Holley. The Trojans are led by a first-year head coach, Robert Hellams. His predecessor, Kyle Richardson, is an offensive assistant at Clemson.
The cherry on top
Fort Dorchester, the South Carolina 4A Division I state champions, is in action Saturday night. The Patriots are led by QB Dakereon Joyner, one of the most highly-recruited 2018 prospects in the state. South Carolina wants him, along with plenty others.
Traveling to Fort Dorchester from Tyrone, Ga., is perennial power Sandy Creek High School, home of several former notable college and NFL players, including future Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson.
This should make for an entertaining and informative weekend right here on SEC Country.
