SpursUp Surveillance: More on OrTre SmithSept. 01, 2016
OrTre Smith isn’t quite sure which school he’ll commit to on Sept. 11. And, contrary to what many folks might believe, he hasn’t told his mom, Tashia Green.
“I always tell people: OrTre is definitely his mother’s child. He is going to do what’s best for him,” she said. “And I’ve explained to him: This is your journey. You go where you want to go, where you feel comfortable.”
Clemson, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina are the finalists for the 4-star WR from Wando High School in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
“I feel, with all the schools, academically … they’re all great,” Green said. “He has to go where he has that stronger relationship with the coaches — the position coach, the head coach and the other coaches. I told him that he’ll know what’s genuine and not genuine.”
She would know what to look for on the recruiting trail. Green played volleyball at Clemson after playing several sports at Wando.
College of Charleston, Georgia Tech and Virginia were her other options.
“My high school coach, Linda White, she coached at Clemson,” Green said. “She was like, ‘I’m going to take care of you. I’ve been knowing you all your life.’ And that’s where I felt really comfortable.
“That’s why I told him to build a relationship with the coaches, because that’s going to be your family for the next four years — really, forever.”
She added, “I always told him, I said, ‘You’re going to know what school you want to go to, because it’s going to hit you in your gut.’ It’s going to be like, this is where I want to go.”
For now, Smith’s announcement is tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m. at Hamlin Plantation in Mount Pleasant, but the guest list will probably exceed capacity, so the gym at Wando is the backup plan.
Talking about TankOne name that hasn’t been written about much around these parts lately is Davondre “Tank” Robinson, who’s in the conversation with OrTre and Shi Smith for the best 2017 prospect from the state of South Carolina.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound 3-star recruit told Phil Kornblut of SportsTalkSC that he’s had recent contact with South Carolina defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson.
“He’s just telling me that they want me to come in and compete and things like that,” Robinson said. “He tells me I can come in and compete and hopefully get some playing time as a freshman. The opportunity is pretty much there for me to come in and play early, so I’ll take that into consideration.”
This was once thought to be a Clemson-South Carolina battle, but that may no longer be the case. Louisville, N.C. State and Virginia Tech are among the serious contenders.
Carter set to announceThree-star CB T.J. Carter will announce his commitment on Friday morning during an appearance on The Bill King Show in Nashville, Tenn.
The No. 46-ranked cornerback in the Class of 2017 attends Stratford Comprehensive High School in Nashville.
On Tuesday night, Carter told Chad Simmons of Scout.com that he was down to five schools: Georgia Tech, Louisville, Memphis, Mississippi State and South Carolina.
With a trio of cornerbacks already on board, the Gamecocks may not have room for the 5-foot-10, 180-pound prospect. Memphis is the trending pick, according to the 247 Crystal Ball.
Marshall to LouisvilleAs expected, 3-star WR Justin Marshall committed to Louisville on Wednesday afternoon.
South Carolina was once a factor for the No. 61-ranked wide receiver, who hails from Covington, Ga. But the Gamecocks weren’t listed among his final three, which also included Tennessee and Maryland.
