Case of the Mondays
Within the span of about an hour on Monday afternoon, South Carolina lost a commitment and a priority recruit.
Devonte Wyatt flipped his commitment to Georgia about 35 minutes after Trajan Bandy committed to Miami.
Wyatt, a 3-star defensive tackle from Towers High School in Decatur, Ga., was an under-the-radar prospect when he committed to the Gamecocks in June. At the time, he was unranked by the 247Sports composite.
Now he’s ranked as the No. 34 defensive tackle in the class of 2017.
Bandy, a 4-star cornerback from Columbus High School in Miami, sounded like he was intrigued by South Carolina after visiting for the cookout. But the hometown Hurricanes couldn’t be topped. The former Oklahoma commitment pulled the trigger at 1 o’clock Monday.
It was only a matter of time before those two commitments were made. At this juncture, it’s probably safe to say South Carolina no longer is a factor for either of the two.
Moving forward up front
With Wyatt’s flip to Georgia, Tyreek Johnson is the lone 2017 defensive lineman committed to South Carolina. That, of course, isn’t counting 2016 signee Javon Kinlaw, who’s approaching the start of his first season at Jones County Junior College in Mississippi. If all goes according to plan, he’ll be on campus in Columbia by this time next year.
Both prospects are from the state of South Carolina. Johnson, is a rising senior from Lakewood High School in Sumter. Kinlaw graduated from Goose Creek High School.
The Gamecocks remain in good shape with 4-star DE M.J. Webb, whose taken multiple visits to the school this year. Webb, who’s from Madison, Ga., is scheduled to take an official visit to South Carolina the weekend of the Georgia game.
South Carolina continues to battle Tennessee, NC State and Duke for DE Matthew Butler (Garner, N.C.). The four schools recently were listed as his finalists.
This weekend, 3-star DT Romello Martin will spend a few days in Columbia. The No. 2 overall prospect from the state of New York attends Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn.
Backpedaling at cornerback
South Carolina has commitments from a pair of 3-star prospects: Tavyn Jackson and Damarri Mathis.
Over the last couple of months, a handful of defensive backs have been offered by the Gamecocks coaches. Since they’re no longer in the picture with Bandy, it will be interesting to see which cornerbacks emerge as potential takes.
Jamyest Williams, the 4-star from Grayson High School in Loganville Ga., figures to be at the top of the list. Fellow 4-star A.J. Terrell would be, but he’s expected to commit to Clemson at some point in the not-too-distant future.
Two 3-star prospects from Woodland High School in Stockbridge, Ga., still are up for grabs: Shakur Brown and Yusuf Corker. Brown is one of the most recent offers. Corker once listed South Carolina as his leader, but since has backed off that stance.
T.J. Carter, a 3-star from Stratford Comprehensive High School in Nashville, Tenn., continues to show interest in South Carolina. The Gamecocks also have offered Aaron Abram, an unranked prospect from Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Plenty of options remain. Stay tuned.
