SpursUp Surveillance: Naytron Culpepper, Justin Marshall zero in on announcements

July 28, 2016

Aiming for an August announcement

On Wednesday night, 3-star S Naytron Culpepper told SEC Country he’s planning to announce his commitment in August. South Carolina, Tennessee and Michigan State are three of the finalists with Mississippi State sitting on the fringe.

Culpepper visited South Carolina twice in June, first with his parents and again later in the month with one of his coaches from Miami Carol City High School in Miami.

“Recently, I decided that it was time to … solidify my spot — as of right now — to a team, until it’s time for the actual papers to be sent,” Culpepper said. “Basically, I just narrowed it down to the teams that are communicating with me the most.”

He visited Michigan State in the spring, but hasn’t been to Tennessee yet, though he plans to take an official to Knoxville.

“In August, if things go right and everything plans out, (the commitment) should be in August,” Culpepper said, “But if not in August, probably around the end of the season.”

SkinnyGiven the timing of his visits and the fact that he hasn’t yet seen Tennessee, Culpepper appears to be headed toward a commitment to South Carolina. The No. 32 ranked safety in the country also sounds like he isn’t ready to completely close the door on his recruitment, if the right suitors were to come along.

Getting down to the nitty-gritty

As South Carolina continues to rebuild its wide receiver corps, one of the Gamecocks top 2017 targets is approaching the end of his recruitment.

Like Culpepper, Justin Marshall, a 3-star wide receiver from Newton High School in Covington, Ga., has been to South Carolina twice this summer.

Marshall’s first visit in June, to work out with wide receiver coach Bryan McClendon. Marshall was back earlier this month for the final week of camp, but only as an observer.

At this point, bigger wide receivers are the priority, and Marshall fits the bill at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds. Along with South Carolina, Auburn, Louisville and Tennessee are thought to be among the favorites, though others are receiving consideration.

“I didn’t really do too (many visits) this summer. I really just chilled and was soaking up the recruiting thing and getting ready to make a decision,” Marshall said.

Aside from his two visits to South Carolina, Marshall also visited Auburn and Tennessee.

“I’ll be making a decision pretty soon,” he said. “I don’t know an actual date or timetable, but it will be pretty soon. It will be before the first game.”

SkinnySouth Carolina is expected to be one of the finalists for Marshall. Folks throughout the industry believe Louisville to be a serious contender, too. He’s been to Columbia a total of three times since the Gamecocks offered in late April. Marshall hasn’t been back to Louisville since his trip earlier that month.

Big DT sees South Carolina twice

Rick Sandidge has emerged as one of the country’s premier 2018 defensive tackles. The 6-foot-5, 273-pound prospect from Concord High School in North Carolina visited South Carolina over the weekend, marking his second trip to Columbia of the summer.

The 4-star prospect told SEC Country that he “had a great time” with his parents at Saturday’s event.

South Carolina’s coaches made “sure me and family where ok and that we were having a great time.”

What stood out about the attention they received?

“How they take care of you and making sure you’re good,” Sandidge said.

In June, he worked out at Muschamp Camp with defensive line coach Lance Thompson.

“They really want me,” Sandidge said.

SkinnyAnytime Alabama sinks its teeth into a defensive lineman, you’ve got your work cut out, and the Tide have already offered the No. 12 defensive tackle in the class of 2018. Lots of programs have, including Florida, Florida State, Michigan and Tennessee.
