SpursUp Surveillance: Trajan Bandy connects with new South Carolina coaches, OrTre Smith weighs in on busy weekendJuly 26, 2016
Former Oklahoma commitment likes South CarolinaTrajan Bandy, a 4-star cornerback from Columbus High School in Miami, Fla., enjoyed his second trip to South Carolina. Bandy visited Saturday for the Gamecocks cookout event and left with a good feeling about Muschamp, defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson and the rest of the folks in Columbia.
“The players are extremely nice. The people up there are amazing. I really enjoyed the visit up there,” Bandy said.
The No. 29 cornerback in the nation last visited South Carolina in the fall for a game. Once he talks things over with his father, Bandy will start thinking about when his third trip will be.
It certainly sounds like he intent on making that happen.
“I just really want to be around genuine people and people that I can really put my trust in and play football with,” Bandy said, “But I know Coach Muschamp and Coach T-Rob coached up the best players in the country, such as Vernon Hargreaves, Jalen Tabor and Quincy Wilson, while those guys were at Florida.
“I talked to a couple of those guys. They told me they’re very genuine guys and they’re real. I did my background check on those guys.”
Skinny: Bandy went on to reiterate his interest in South Carolina. From the sound of it, the Gamecocks will be right there to the very end. He added, “I really like it there and I feel like they’re real people.” This could evolve into a battle between South Carolina and his hometown team, Miami. Three of his high school teammates are committed to the Hurricanes.
OrTre Smith’s laid-back weekendThe No. 1 prospect in the state of South Carolina enjoyed both of his stops this weekend — at a cookout Friday at Clemson and South Carolina’s event Saturday.
“It was just relaxing. It wasn’t a recruiting trip, we just had fun,” Smith said about Clemson. “It was just mingling around, meeting new people. I enjoyed myself. It was just something to relax.”
It was a similar feel the next day, when the 4-star athlete from Wando High School (Mount Pleasant) stopped in Columbia.
“It was a little more activity, like dodgeball, corn hole — we had the dunk both, trying to dunk Coach Muschamp and we had a balloon toss … it was a fun day,” Smith said. “It was the same as Clemson, not a lot of recruiting was put into it, but just talking to people, getting to meet new people.”
A week earlier, Smith was at Georgia for camp, though he didn’t work out. Most of his afternoon was spent alongside 4-star wide receiver Jeremiah Holloman. Those three visits should be the final stops of the summer for Smith, who’s turning his focus to Wando High.
Skinny: Smith said he’s “more than likely” going to schedule some official visits before his Sept. 11 announcement, but no dates have been nailed down. There’s an opening for Smith to visit South Carolina the first weekend of the month, since the Gamecocks play that Thursday at Vanderbilt. And, of course, they’re on the road again in week two. Clemson is on the road for the opening weekend before their home opener against Troy on the following weekend.
Another DB from the Miami areaAsante Samuel Jr. will visit South Carolina on Tuesday. The news gained traction Monday when Kyshaun Bryan — the Gamecocks 2017 running back commitment — posted the news on Twitter
Samuel, the No. 25 ranked cornerback in the class of 2018, is Bryan’s teammate at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Apparently, Samuel wanted to let Bandy know that he’s heading up to Columbia.
Skinny: South Carolina continues to pique the interest of several top cornerback prospects. Muschamp and Robinson’s names carry weight in the state of Florida, especially down in Dade and Broward Counties. Samuel is yet another example of the coaches’ ability to recruit in that area.
