For Muschamp, the son of a high school football coach, hitting the road to go watch high school football games isn’t really work.
How does the saying go?
It’s not really work if you love what you do. That applies to Muschamp and recruiting.
“I love high school football and I love going to high school games with the band and all the stuff that goes on,”
Muschamp said. “But I think it’s good to promote high school football in our state.”
On Friday, Muschamp made several stops in the Upstate. He was spotted at the Boiling Springs/T.L. Hanna game that night, after making appearances at Woodmont and Westside earlier that day.
“We have great coaches in our state. We have great players in our state. I had a blast Friday night. I enjoy getting to do that,” Muschamp said. “I think it’s important as anything, I like evaluating players and being able to evaluate them in a game-setting situation. I love doing that.”
Thursday night’s game at Vanderbilt afford Muschamp the opportunity to get back out on the road. He plans to make a few more in-season recruiting stops.
“In the open week, obviously, we’ll be out Thursday and Friday,” he said. “There’s a couple of home game situations, because we do all of work at the stadium on Friday morning, because we’re practicing in the morning (that’s) when we do all of our walk-throughs. We’re done Friday morning with some of our stuff, so there will be some Friday nights that I go out.”
Muschamp was originally slated to see 5-star DE Xavier Thomas on Friday night, but rain moved Wilson’s game at Conway to Thursday night. That, of course, was the same night as South Carolina’s opener against Vanderbilt.
Thomas was also scheduled to take his first visit to Auburn on Saturday night for the Clemson game, but those plans fell through because of the heavy rain. He is expected to return to Columbia next weekend for South Carolina’s home opener against East Carolina.

With a recent commitment from 4-star M.J. Webb and priority prospects Brad Johnson and Matthew Butler still up for grabs, we’re not so sure that South Carolina really was an option for Whittaker. At least not right now.
