SpursUp visit recaps from Gavin Schoenwald, Trey Dean

Gavin Schoenwald speaks
Gavin Schoenwald’s visit to South Carolina on Saturday for the SpursUp recruiting event was different than your average, run-of-the-mill recruiting visit.
“A lot of it, we didn’t really talk football that much. It was really laid-back,” Schoenwald said. “We hung out by the pool for a little bit, went on a scavenger hunt. It was kind of their way of seeing campus on a golf cart, which was really cool. It was laid-back and all the players were there.
“We were able to talk to them, ask any questions that we had about anything. It was much more about trying to get a feel for the culture and getting to know the coaches better, rather than what the actual school and football program has to offer.”
The 3-star athlete, who’s being recruited as a tight end, spent a considerable amount of time with Gamecocks tight end Hayden Hurst, who’s likely to head to the NFL in 2018.
“It was kind of cool to be able to get a player’s perspective, I guess. You always talk to coaches and (graduate assistants) or whoever, but you get to actually sit down and talk to a player and it’s a little bit different,” Schoenwald said. “Talked a lot about the off-field stuff and what it’s like to be a student at USC, what goes on in his daily schedule and everything, but we also talked about the team as well, his role and where I could fit if I ended up deciding to go there.
“Getting the player’s perspective was really cool and different than anything I’ve ever experienced.”
Tight ends coach Pat Washington and running backs coach Bobby Bentley, the area recruiter, were also around for a good portion of the day. So were Muschamp and offensive coordinator Kurt Roper.
“Coach Muschamp is a good guy. He’s a good guy. I like him a lot. I believe in what he’s doing,” Schoenwald said.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound prospect from Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy last visited South Carolina for the Missouri game.
“Gamecock football and the whole ‘Sandstorm’ thing with the towels is pretty special. You can see, everywhere you go — even if you’re 10 miles outside of Columbia, you’ll see Gamecocks on the back of people’s trucks and things like that, so the fan base is rallying around the team and I really think they’re going to rally around Coach Muschamp,” Schoenwald said. “His future, I think it’s definitely bright.”
Trey Dean dishes
Like Schoenwald, 4-star safety Trey Dean (6-foot-2, 180 pounds) was among the prospects who made it to campus for the event, which was primarily made up of 2018 priorities.
“It wasn’t really like a recruiting visit,” Dean told Phil Kornblut of Spurs & Feathers and SportsTalk. “Felt like a family day. I liked everything that they had on campus. The coaching staff is always great and South Carolina stands pretty high on my list.”
Dean, who’s from Dutchtown High School in Hampton, Ga., is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 24 safety in the Class of 2018.
“They said they really want me and I’ll put them to the next level,” he said.
Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Louisville are among the schools listed on his offer sheet.
