State’s top prospects talk Gamecocks
July 17, 2017
Several of the top prospects from the state of South Carolina were in town Sunday for the High School Sports Report media day.
The annual event, which was hosted inside the Gamecocks indoor practice facility, was attended by Columbia-Spring Valley 4-star linebacker Channing Tindall, Irmo-Dutch Fork 3-star athlete Bryce Thompson and Rock Hill-South Pointe 3-star cornerback Steven Gilmore Jr. South Carolina commitments Dakereon Joyner (North Charleston-Fort Dorchester) and RJ Roderick (Summerville-Cane Bay) were there, too.
No one from Will Muschamp’s staff was on hand, but Tindall, 247Sports’ top overall in-state prospect in the Class of 2018, was planning to meet with them before he left campus.
On Saturday, Tindall visited Georgia, where he worked out for inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann.
“Coach Schumann, I didn’t know how he was going to be from a (graduate assistant) to a positional, linebackers coach,” Tindall said. “But after working without him, I really feel like he has the tools to be able to succeed.
“I was really impressed about everything I saw down there, so Georgia is definitely one that’s high on my list.”
Tindall is set to attend Florida’s Friday Night Lights camp on Friday. On Saturday, he’ll take his first visit to Tallahassee.
Joyner and Roderick “stay trying to get me to come to South Carolina.”
What’s their recruiting pitch?
“Man, stay home,” Tindall said. “Change the culture. You know we’re doing something big here.”
Joyner, the No. 1 quarterback in the state, is also recruiting Thompson, who’s already made a silent commitment to North Carolina State, South Carolina or Virginia Tech, where he was once committed.
Thompson could go public with his decision on July 30, but he has to “take care of some stuff first.” South Carolina has primarily recruited him as a defensive back. However, if he ends up with the Gamecocks, his future could be on the offensive side of the ball.
“I’m not sure yet,” Thompson said. “We really didn’t get into that, but (Muschamp) said I could play any position I wanted.”
Joyner certainly wouldn’t mind having him in the Gamecocks receiving corps. Along with Tindall, Joyner continues to recruit 5-star defensive end Xavier Thomas, who’s committed to Clemson. Jovaughn Gwyn, a 3-star offensive guard, is also on Joyner’s prospect list.
