We have been waiting on Steve Spurrier to drop a bit of insight on us today at the SEC media days, and before he hit the podium, it happened.

According to ESPN’s Joe Schad, Spurrier said, “It's easier to win the national championship than the SEC. Ask Nick Saban."

Spurrier: "It's easier to win the national championship than the SEC. Ask Nick Saban."

If that isn’t a shot across the bow, I don’t know what is.

Of course, Spurrier is referring to the Crimson Tide not making it to the SEC title game in 2011 but finishing the regular season as national champions.

The Crimson Tide handily defeated LSU in the title game, 21-0, but not winning the conference left a bit of an asterisk beside the title for some. Spurrier appears to be one of those people.

Will we get a response from Nick Saban regarding this comment? One can only hope that a media member will have the tenacity to ask for a reaction.

There isn’t a doubt that Saban will have a response ready, and it will likely be one that is just as edgy and pointed in the direction of the Gamecocks head coach. Things like that happen in the SEC—all smiles up front, but there aren’t many friends in the room today that wear different colors.

Who else really hopes to get a new rivalry started? Unfortunately—or maybe fittingly—the only way these two coaches' teams will meet this season is in the SEC title game. Wouldn’t that be interesting?

Spurrier is always reliable for a good quote, and this is a great way to start off the SEC media days.

No, winning a national title doesn’t add any street cred in SEC country. For that, you have to win the conference—at least, that’s what matters to Spurrier.

There is sure to be more to come from this quote, but there will be plenty of other tidbits before the day is out.
