Two years ago USC blew a double digit second half lead and lost a stunner to Kentucky. Saturday night the Gamecocks staggered into the half trailing by double digits before putting the throttle down in the second half to take home a 38-17 win over the Wildcats.
“Two different halves,” Spurrier said. Our guys really played in the second half. I mean, we couldn’t even cover kicks or punts in the first half. They almost ran off and left us in the first half. ..But fortunately it didn’t cost us.”

Steve Spurrier on comeback [2:54]
All teams, even the great ones, have to find ways to win on night’s they don’t play their best. Take a look back at the Cam Newton led Auburn team in 2010 as an example. You may recall the Tigers coming back from 17 down to beat Clemson and rallying from double digits in their first matchup with USC and at arch rival Alabama as well. They even came from behind at Commonwealth Stadium that season, kicking a field goal as time expired to win.
Before you fire off the irate email, to be clear, I am not trying to compare this Gamecock team to the 2010 national champs. I am just pointing out championship caliber teams find a way to win games like this. Whether or not Spurrier’s crew can continue to progress and be a contender remains to be seen. But with fifth ranked Georgia, third ranked LSU and 11th ranked Florida looming over the next three week, Spurrier is about to find out.
We got a chance for a good season, a real good season or an average season,” Spurrier said. Then as he stepped away from the podium he added, “It was a good win. Proud of our guys. Again, we had some good camaraderie. We acted like we wanted to play. It was good to see.”
Now we will see if they can take that into Georgia next week.
