Steve Spurrier is no stranger to program building. He won an ACC title at Duke and turned Florida into a perennial contender in the SEC. Now in each of the past three seasons USC has been a factor in the SEC East race. The Head Ball Coach says his run in Columbia reminds him a bit of his days in Gainsville.
“Actually it is a little similar to Florida,” Spurrier said Tuesday. “Everybody thinks Florida was always a power house, they weren’t really when we go. “
“It’s been sort of similar here to win 11 for the first time. Florida never won 10 games prior to ’90. Some new things were happening, and hopefully we can keep moving. We certainly haven’t reached anything near what those teams were able to do, but we’re trying to get there. The competition is a lot tougher now than it was back in ’90 in the SEC.”
Spurrier has also seen a marked difference in the Gamecock fanbase. Early in his tenure Spurrier scolded the fans for clapping after a close loss against a top five Auburn team. The HBC said then fans shouldn’t clap for losing. He said they should expect to win those games. These days, they do.
“I think our fans have handled it very well and understand a little bit now more about expecting to beat those guys, expecting to win the game,” Spurrier said. We’re going to come to the ball park expecting to do that and I’m sure Georgia is going to expect the same thing.”
Spurrier is 14-5 all-time against Georgia. He is 3-4 against them since he took over at USC. The Gamecocks have won two straight against the Bulldogs. They have never won three in a row against the Dawgs.
No doubt Spurrier would like nothing more than to add that to his ever growing list of “first” at USC.
