Sunday weekend visitor updates

December 17, 2017

With two official visitors on campus, it was a big South Carolina recruiting weekend, but there were also some big-time 2019 targets in Columbia.

Three-star guard Jovaughn Gwyn, who arrived for his official visit on Saturday afternoon, was joined by his teammate from Harding University High School (Charlotte, N.C.), 5-star running back Quavaris Crouch.

Gwyn, the No. 20 guard in the Class of 2018, is expected to sign during the early signing period, which runs Wednesday through Friday. N.C. State and Duke are also in the mix, but South Carolina is viewed as the team to beat.

The 6-foot-3, 290-pound guard has three 247Sports Crystal Ball picks for South Carolina and N.C. State, but the most recent selections were issued for the Gamecocks.

Once cleared to make a selection on the Crystal Ball, I’m planning to select South Carolina for Gwyn. While many Gamecocks fans are eager to get the same word on Crouch, it’s far too early to make any sort of predictions for him because his recruitment is just getting started.

5:30 p.m. UPDATE ****

For bowl practice on Saturday, South Carolina hosted 2019 4-star defensive end Curtis Fann Jr. (Twin Cities, Ga.), who recently listed the Gamecocks in his top 4 with Clemson, Auburn and Florida.

“I liked how the d-line was practicing and how the coaches were coaching them,” Fann said of the practice. “It was my first time seeing them coach the players, so I liked that a lot.”

South Carolina made the cut, in part, because of the relationship that’s already been established by coach Will Muschamp. Fann said he hears more from Muschamp than any other head coach, “by far.”

“It’s a good relationship and I like the program a lot,” Fann said.

Muschamp, defensive line coach Lance Thompson and offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon spoke with Fann while he was in town.

1:35 p.m. UPDATE ***

After the official visit, Gwyn spoke with GamecockCentral’s Wes Mitchell.

“It went well. This time we got to chill more, so that was cool,” Gwyn said.

The 3-star guard also sat down with coach Will Muschamp while he was on campus.

“He was just telling how much they want me and everything,” Gwyn said. “They want to get more athletic on the line of scrimmage. He said he believes that I can come in and fill that need.”

More Sunday updates on the Gamecocks weekend visitors. Who else was on campus?

  • 2018 3-star safety Israel Mukuamu (Bossier City, La.)
  • 2018 3-star linebacker Rosendo Louis (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) FSU commitment/official visitor
  • 2019 4-star defensive end Curtis Fann Jr. (Twin Cities, Ga.)
  • Based off this tweet from junior cornerback Keisean Nixon, it would appear that 4-star cornerback Jaycee Horn was also in town on Saturday, though it has yet to be confirmed.
Two things to keep in mind:

  • Horn took an official visit to South Carolina last weekend.
  • Saturday was the first day of bowl practice for the Gamecocks.
