T-Rob hits D.C.
On Friday, the first day of the current contact period, which allows college coaches to visit recruits, South Carolina defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson was in the nation’s capital, to check in on a handful of prospects.
The name that was probably at the top of his list was 3-star 2018 cornerback D.J. Brown, who’s committed to Virginia. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound prospect is scheduled to take an official visit to South Carolina this weekend.
While at St. John’s College High School (Washington, D.C.) visiting Brown, Robinson dropped off offers to two of his teammates from the Class of 2020: cornerback Luke Hill and outside linebacker/defensive end Mekhail Sherman.
Hill (6-foot, 170 pounds) has offers from Boston College, Maryland, Rutgers, Syracuse, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Sherman (6-3, 234) has offers from Maryland, North Carolina, Penn State and Syracuse.
According to 247Sports, Sherman is a 4-star prospect and ranked as the No. 5 outside linebacker in the Class of 2020.
Both sophomores plan to visit South Carolina in the not-too-distant future.
Official visit to Auburn
Four-star offensive tackle Dylan Wonnum took his first official visit last weekend. After leaving Auburn, he declined the customary on-campus interview session with reporters, but SEC Country’s Ben Wolk did catch up with a couple of Wonnum’s friends, both of whom are committed to the Tigers.
Here’s part of what Wolk wrote:
Two recruits provided their input on Wonnum after their visits. [Jalil] Irvin and Wonnum have grown up friends. [Michael] Harris plays on the same high school team as Wonnum. Both of them are taking a sense of optimism, but not supreme confidence, when it comes to the 4-star offensive tackle.
Wonnum will take visits to South Carolina and Tennessee, too. South Carolina is the one to watch.
Like Brown, Wonnum will take an official visit this weekend to South Carolina. According to the 247Sports composite, he’s ranked as the No. 10 offensive tackle in the Class of 2018.
Back on market
Former Arkansas defensive end commitment John Mincey (Homerville, Ga.) has three official visits scheduled, none of which are to see the Hogs. Tennessee is up first this weekend, followed by South Carolina (Jan. 26) and Florida State (Feb. 3).
“He’s really going through a lot of anxiety right now,” said Clinch County coach Jim Dickerson during an interview with Phil Kornblut. “It broke his heart to de-commit from Arkansas. Big thing about John, he’s only 17 years old. Everybody realizes what an upside he has. His stock has really just exploded the last few weeks.”
South Carolina is also set to have an in-home visit on Monday.
“He likes all of them, checking them all out,” Clinch County assistant coach Trent Hatton said. “He’s had a real good year and worked hard with his grades and in the weight room, and things are starting to happen for him, so I’m proud of him.”
Mincey, a 3-star prospect, is ranked as the No. 34 strongside defensive end in the Class of 2018.
