Takeaways From The Gamecocks Huge Upset Win Over Georgia

No, you aren’t dreaming. South Carolina actually went into Athens and beat third ranked Georgia.

This game was a rollercoaster of emotions and the fact South Carolina won is just unbelievable to me and other fans.

A lot of things went wrong, and a lot of things went right.

Either way, a win is a win and here are my three takeaways from this shocking upset:

Maybe Muschamp isn’t that bad

I will admit I was extremely critical of Muschamp when the Gamecocks were 1-2 when they should’ve been 3-0, but something changed when Muschamp put on the glasses.

Maybe they’re like Peter Parker’s God’s eye glasses in Far From Home, but either way this team has looked completely different in the last two games.

The dominant win over Kentucky to end the losing streak was great, but this win was the biggest win in Muschamp’s tenure easily.

I still think he needs to do a better job of managing injuries, especially taking out your star quarterback when he’s already limping.

He’s going to have a tough road ahead with so many injuries, but this win gives me a lot more confidence in him.

Israel Mukuamu is the real deal

Fromm had not thrown an interception all season until this game.

Mukuamu has a 6’4” wingspan, and it certainly showed today when he reached up to pick off Fromm and run it back for a touchdown.

I can’t remember the last time I heard an announcer say that a quarterback shouldn’t throw to a certain South Carolina defender.

This secondary has been torn apart all season, but this performance by Mukuamu will certainly be a memorable one.

He was my player of the game.

Joyner was a big part of this win

He didn’t have the best stats, but Dakereon Joyner stepped in and managed the game well enough to help South Carolina win.

The Hilinski injury is going to heavily affect this offense for at least the next few weeks, but I believe Joyner will step up and play well.

It honestly amazes me how Joyner has stayed with this team instead of transferring, but now is finally his time.

It doesn’t get any easier as South Carolina has to play Florida next week, but I’m excited to see how this offense changes when it’s centered around Joyner.

Conclusion

I think the last time I was this happy after a win was the 2014 win over Georgia.

I honestly think this was the greatest upset in South Carolina history because it was on the road as major underdogs.

I didn’t expect the Gamecocks to have a chance, but I’m happy they proved me wrong.

It will definitely be a fun game against Florida next week.

It follows pretty closely the way the Mizzou victory did in 2013. Shaw comes off the bench to get us to_OT, then a kick is missed to give us the win.

Agree that Muschamp is seeing the fruits of his recruiting labor. Development was not visible until recently but, wow! What development defensively... My favorite part was our game plan was better than the dawgs and we executed as good as necessary due to our awesome defensive effort.

Certainly my outlook is much more garnet hued than before!

I keep hearing the praises of Joyner and frankly don’t get it.  His drives all ended in 5 punts. I’m not saying it’s his fault with limited practice time.  But basically all he did was not fumble or throw an int.  He wasn’t stellar but he wasn’t a disaster either, so I guess that was enough to make him a hero.   There was nothing I saw on the field that would make me think he could take the team down and score the winning touchdown. Luckily he didn’t have to.

My biggest take-a-way on this game was our defense stepped up and play the best that they have done all season.  Hard tackling and pass defenders were playing "lights out coverage for the most part".  Running game was good at times and until Ryan Hillinski went out - I really thought we would score another TD or two.  Dak Joyner came in and played a very manageable game for us, but he is not the Savior for this team if Ryan H is hurt and can't play anymore.  Dak Joyner is a fast athlete, but as a passing QB he is sort of a liability back there.  I don't know if Jay Ulrich might not be a better option for us?  The O-Coordinator and QB Coach would know that answer better than me, but Dak just looks small back there and I think you need a QB who can see over the big lineman and has a good arm.  If the O-Coaching Staff thinks Dak Joyner gives us a better chance to win, then I will be behind him 100%, but I just did not see anything great about his performance against GA other than what he was suppose to do and that was manage the game and don't give up any turnovers.

Kinlaw and company were monsters out there against that Big GA O-Line!!!!

I agree with the glasses theory.....that was when the transformation took place.

After watching the replay I started to wonder if Mukuamu wouldn't be a huge asset as a receiver, good hands and FAST down the sideline.

Mukuamu had a monster game and made plays the whole game but we have to give some credit to Kinlaw on the pick 6. Kinlaw put the pressure on Fromm so that he couldn't get much on the throw which made the pick 6 possible. It was great to see the defense have such a great game.
