USC’s recruiting class got a nice boost on Monday with a commitment from multifaceted Octavis Johnson of Homerville, GA. Johnson can play several positions from receiver to linebacker to the secondary. But he said Tuesday its the cornerback position he’s penciled in for at USC.
Johnson picked the Gamecocks over Tennessee and Kentucky.
“I feel good about it,” Johnson said. “I feel like that’s the best place for me to continue my football career and get a good education. They win a lot and to be able to be coached by coach Spurrier, that’s going to be great.”
Johnson visited USC for the Florida game last season and and his teammates will be on campus in late July for camp. He did check out several other schools this spring and recently named Tennessee as his favorite after a visit there. But the Gamecocks kept up their recruiting efforts and were able to turn him.
Johnson is 6-0, 183 and feels his size is one of his greatest assets as a cornerback. “I’m physical and I like to play man to man a lot,” he said.
Johnson realizes the commitment won’t stop the recruiting but he called his commitment “100 percent” and he doesn’t plan any more visits. He will not be an early high school graduate.
